CD Case Designs

Hey guys, I'm designing a CD case for my A2 Product Design coursework, and need to get some answers to my questionnaire (so that I can design with what the public want - or you hard dance buyers!). I don't expect ANYONE to do this for me, but it would be amazing if you could answer these questions (can be as brief as u wish!).

Thanks to anyone who helps me out here!

Alf

[1] Talking purely from an aesthetics (design and looks) point of view, do you prefer your CD cases to look either:

[] Contemporary [] Arty [] Bright [] Futuristic [] Modern

[2] Would you like to see a logo of the label on the CD design featuring as a main design element (e.g Hard House Anthems 4 with Nukleuz logo)?

[3] Would you prefer mainly a graphically orientated design, or a text based design?

[4] Would you like a standard track list layout, or would you like to see the contents of the CD displayed in a more original way?

[5] Would you like a small piece of text allowing the buyer to see who is on the CD ‘at a glance’ (Featuring x, y, z and many more …) on the front?

[6] Which of the following CD case designs do you prefer. [] One jewel case which has space for 2 CDs

[] Two jewel cases which are stored together in a cardboard case

[] A plastic and card opening design, which opens out for removal of CDs.

[7] Would you like to see heavy graphical design work, or a lighter CD cover design?

[8] Finally, explain what your perfect CD case design would actually look like in terms of graphics.

Well for me it would be a combination of bright & modern/futuristic

yes I would like to see the logo

Graphic!!

original could work!!

[5] Would you like a small piece of text allowing the buyer to see who is on the CD ‘at a glance’ (Featuring x, y, z and many more …) on the front?

this makes no odds to me, I always look at all tracks & artists!!

Yes

Graphic with a little bit of text.

[4] Would you like a standard track list layout, or would you like to see the contents of the CD displayed in a more original way?

hmm depends if you can think of anythin original that's good! Otherwise stick with the standard.

[5] Would you like a small piece of text allowing the buyer to see who is on the CD ‘at a glance’ (Featuring x, y, z and many more …) on the front?

Maybe a small piece, wouldn't want it too cluttered..but then if I was looking in HMV through the albums and saw one which featured a couple of artists I liked on the front, I would more likely pick it up to look at the full track listing on the back...

[6] Which of the following CD case designs do you prefer.

[7] Would you like to see heavy graphical design work, or a lighter CD cover design?

i'd go for the lighter option

dunno..if it was my cd, i'd probably focus on the strongest track on the cd and think of a idea around that..(what we did when I was in a band and we made a couple of cds!)

chilled out beach house thru to bangin' hard german trance

here's my answer (things that are important to me):

prefer be 1 disc size, or 2 discs size (lay 1 cd on a table, or two cd's side by side on the table). I've got a wallet that is 4 discs size, and it's a pain to handle in the car.

hold at least 50 cd's

the soft wallet inserts would be attached to the hard case by a couple if 'rivets' or something? make sure the attachments can't be be broken, so the wallet bit doesn't end up floating around inside the outer case.

tough/waterproof outer case. chances are, in the car it'll have water spilt on it, ppl stepping on it, things put on it, etc etc. the zip should have a tag on it so i can yank it open when i'm not looking at the thing.

cd's should be dead easy to remove from their soft wallets, since i put the case on the passenger seat of the car and pull cd's out of it/put them back in when I'm driving, cos i'm naughty.

Modern, Contemporary, Futuristic combination i think for me

[2] Would you like to see a logo of the label on the CD design featuring as a main design element (e.g Hard House Anthems 4 with Nukleuz logo)?

Yes, i think its good to see a logo as also gives u more of an indication of what style of music to expect

[3] Would you prefer mainly a graphically orientated design, or a text based design?

I think a bit of both to be honest, never good to have too much of one thing and the graphics would give it the aesthetic value to it and the text would give the informative value imo

[4] Would you like a standard track list layout, or would you like to see the contents of the CD displayed in a more original way?

To be honest, either would be fine, so long as the information was there, i generally think that its the front of the cd that catches the eye and the back that gives the information, so as long as the info is presented in a clear and understandable manner thats what matters?!

[5] Would you like a small piece of text allowing the buyer to see who is on the CD ‘at a glance’ (Featuring x, y, z and many more …) on the front?

Yes, its always good to have *some* idea as to what is on the cd so that it gives you more incentive to actually look further into what is actually on the cd.. a bit of a taster as such.

[6] Which of the following CD case designs do you prefer. [] One jewel case which has space for 2 CDs

[] One jewel case which has space for 2 CDs

I prefer to have it the size of a single cd case and open out for both cds in it, less space taken the better - so the first one then lol

[7] Would you like to see heavy graphical design work, or a lighter CD cover design?

It depends on the cd content i think... id say the more chilled music suits a lighter design and the more "banging" the cd content was suits a more graphically detailed design

[8] Finally, explain what your perfect CD case design would actually look like in terms of graphics.

Something eye catching, but not too busy in terms of graphics, just enough to catch ur eye andmake u interested with a little bit of text on the front saying a few of the artists featured on the cd and the name of the cd with a logo on it.

Arty

Yes, it's informative

[3] Would you prefer mainly a graphically orientated design, or a text based design?

Mainly graphics but with informative text.

[4] Would you like a standard track list layout, or would you like to see the contents of the CD displayed in a more original way?

Standard track list layout (or original but as long as it's very easy to read)

[5] Would you like a small piece of text allowing the buyer to see who is on the CD ‘at a glance’ (Featuring x, y, z and many more …) on the front?

Definitely.

[6] Which of the following CD case designs do you prefer.

The 2nd one.

[7] Would you like to see heavy graphical design work, or a lighter CD cover design?

heavy graphical design is more interesting

[8] Finally, explain what your perfect CD case design would actually look like in terms of graphics.

very colourful, and arty (an image that's a suggestion of what's inside) with the use of metallic embossed text. Must state the name of the album and who it's by, with a track listing on the back.

No, I'm going to tell him what I find useful in a CD wallet.

I'm not particularly bothered about what it looks like. So now he can put everyone elses ideas into what it looks like, and add some of my functionality into it, which will make a better project. so there nerner.gif
