Heard of a few people having issues getting to grips with the firewal which is automatically switched on in this release - i.e. it can have the effect of stopping a few apps working unless its configured correctly.

Strange that the default has changed :s  This is one thing which peed me off going from 2000->XP - many defaults were changed to what 'they' thought would be better.

you can turn it off - select 'I have a firewall I will monitor myself' and its gone :-)

SP2 fixes a load of bugs as well which can only be a good thing?? touch wood, I have had no problems so far anyway

Yep agreed - I was just trying to make the point that newbie computer people dont often understand questions such as that and I dont think MS should change defaults from release to release

Yeah well, what is annoying to a few computer boffins is good for the majority!

You have to admit, what MS do makes a lot of business sense! smile.gif TBH there were only about 7 or 8 settings I had to change after installing XP to make it suit me (such as showing system folders, showing file extensions, not retaining a different view for every folder, etc). And for the majority of people, hiding system folders etc are sensible defaults.

By definition, every move to make software easier for the masses, will piss somebody off somewhere along the line.

Not all MS's software is "dumbed down". IMHO Microsoft Developer Studio .NET is a legendary product -- aimed at power users, perfect for power users (but still easy to use). A great example of MS pitching their software at the right level for the market.

never used it, but .NET is a product aimed at power users, so you'd expect it to be like that smile.gif

Yeah, I guess you cant really knock any MS products - not much competition really. Its all too easy to concentrate on the negative things I guess !
