bagleys-heritage.jpgAbout

Bagleys was a legendary nightclub in King's Cross, London, that operated from the early 1990s until 2007. It was located in a former Victorian warehouse in the Coal Drops Yard area, which at the time was a largely derelict industrial zone.

History

  • The building that housed Bagley's was originally built in the 1850s as part of the Great Northern Railway's coal operation. It was used for storing and transferring coal.

  • Later, one of the warehouses was occupied by a glass bottle company called Bagley's, which is where the nightclub got its name.

  • In the late 1980s, the warehouse was taken over by a film company, and by the early 1990s, it became a nightclub.

  • Bagley's became a haven for the rave scene, which was being pushed indoors by the Criminal Justice Act of 1994. Its large size and industrial setting made it perfect for large-scale dance parties.

  • The club had multiple rooms with different music genres, including hardcore, jungle, garage, and techno. It was known for its long opening hours and its diverse and energetic crowds.

  • Bagley's was a key part of the King's Cross nightlife scene, which also included other clubs like The Cross and The Key. This area was known as "Club City" and attracted clubbers from all over the UK.

  • In 2003, Bagley's was taken over by new management and renamed Canvas, but it eventually closed down in 2007 as the area was redeveloped.

Events

Bagley's hosted a wide variety of club nights and events, including:

  • Freedom: One of the most famous nights at Bagley's, known for its hardcore and jungle music.

  • The Mud Club: A decadent and surreal night with a mix of music and performance art.

  • Pushca: Another popular night that featured house and techno music.

  • World Dance: A night that showcased different genres of dance music from around the world.

  • Bagley's also hosted live performances by famous artists like Prince and Madonna.

Legacy

Bagley's is remembered as one of the most iconic nightclubs in London's history. It played a significant role in the development of the rave scene and helped to put King's Cross on the map as a nightlife destination. Although the club is no longer there, its legacy lives on in the memories of the people who danced there and in the music that was played.

Today, the Coal Drops Yard area where Bagley's was located has been transformed into a shopping and dining destination. However, there are still some reminders of the area's past, such as Bagley Walk, a raised walkway that is named after the nightclub.
