⚠️ Heads up: this is a beta. It's brand new, it's had zero real-world use, and we've put it out early on purpose so you can kick the tyres. Expect the odd rough edge, a number that looks off, or something that doesn't quite behave. That's what this thread is for. 🐛

One thing we're being upfront about 🙋

At the bottom there's a "How complete is this data?" panel. Our venue, town, genre and DJ figures come from how promoters tag their events - which is never 100%. Rather than quietly hide that, we show you exactly what share of events each number actually covers.

So a low percentage there isn't a bug - it's the dashboard being honest with you. But if you spot a venue that's obviously missing, or a DJ who should be showing up and isn't, that is worth flagging. 🙏

Thought we'd follow up with a bit more on why this exists and where it's going, since a wall of charts doesn't really explain itself.

Why build it

CTW already had all of this data sitting there - /whatson/ lists the events, /djs/ lists who's playing them, /venues/ lists where. But every one of those pages shows you one slice at a time. There was nothing that showed the shape of the whole thing.

And there are questions about this scene that everybody has an opinion on and nobody has a number for. Is clubbing actually shrinking, or does it just feel that way? Has everything really collapsed onto Saturday? Which towns still have a proper scene and which ones have one venue keeping the lights on? Which genres are actually getting booked this year versus which ones we just talk about a lot?

We got fed up not being able to answer those. The listings we already hold can answer them - they just needed adding up. That's all the dashboard is: 3,774 events, 1,100-odd venues and a thousand-odd tags, counted honestly.

On "counted honestly"

That's what the completeness panel at the bottom is for, and it's the part we'd most like people to read. The event data comes in from promoter feeds, and how well-tagged an event is depends entirely on how much effort the promoter put in. Right now we can place about 93% of events at a known venue and genre-tag basically all of them - but only around half get a usable town, and only about 1 in 5 have enough lineup detail to credit a DJ. So the DJ chart is not "the most-booked DJs in the UK." It's "the most-booked DJs among the events where somebody bothered to list a lineup." Those are very different claims and we'd rather publish the gap than let the chart imply the first one.

Where it's heading

The big one is time. The listings archive only started filling up properly since July 2026 (although we have many more clubbing events we're still backfilling since 2001), so there's currently no honest "vs. last year" anywhere on the page - any growth figure right now would be measuring our own data collection switching on, not the scene changing. We left the percentage-change tiles off deliberately for that reason. Around this time next year there'll be two comparable years and the page stops being a snapshot and starts being a trend line. That's the version we actually want.

After that, roughly in order:

• Better coverage, especially lineups and towns. This is where you lot can genuinely help - if you spot a night, a venue or a DJ that's missing or mis-tagged, say so and it gets fixed at the source, which improves every page on the site, not just this one.

• Promoters and brands as their own ranking. Frantic, Tidy, MOS, Goodgreef and the rest are already recognised in the data; they deserve a chart.

• Scene churn - new venues appearing, venues going quiet. Arguably the single most telling health metric there is.

• Downloadable numbers, so if you want to argue with a figure you can take it away and check it.

• Per-DJ, per-venue and per-town stats on their own pages, rather than everything being site-wide.

The longer-term point

Listings sites are built to forget. An event happens, it drops off, it's gone. We're not deleting ours. Every night that gets synced becomes part of a permanent, public record of what this scene actually looked like - and in five or ten years, being able to pull up what a given town's Saturday night looked like in 2026 and put it next to 2031 is worth far more than any single chart on the page today.

That archive is the real project. The dashboard is just the first window into it.
