know ur body better then a doctor? scratchy.gif

my delightful, painful, skanky looking rash, which ive had for over 2 weeks is finally clearing up thanx to steriod cream.

however in that time ive seen 3 doctors who gave me antihistimines(they not worked)and said it an allergy.

ive been saying to them that it may of started as an allergy but isnt now.

i then went back yesterday and saw a diff one again who said

"thats definatly not an allergy"

he had no idea exactly what it was as covered my body but 'hey presto'

its clearing up.

if only they'd of listened 2 weeks ago,i wouldnt be going clubbing looking like a leper mad.gif

apologises for this long boring post wink.gif

I have the greatest of respect for nurses, and specialists, esp surgeons, and medical reserchers, and medical scientists. (except the ones working on MMR research, who claim there is nothing in it) but to be honest GP's are useless.

They are over streched, over bombarded with hand outs from the drug companies, and overloaded with patients queing up for the witch doctor juju cure stylee.

I went to a GP once, knowing the symptoms i had were an old condition, and was told categorically i was too young to have it. Only when i made him read the notes did he belive me. Another time, i had a hell of a time being diagnosed with IBS, and it took the bloke that is the Queen's gastroenterologist to finally sort it out. Don't even get me started on the other stuff..

The thing to do is argue with them and hold your ground. They normally give way in the end, if only to get rid of you.

I have been very lucky and rarely been ill and have rarely been to see a GP (which reminds me i haven't registered since leaving school - never mind)

my sister has had some very bad experiences, from school nurses not knowing how to treat a nosebleed properly (my sister had to explain to them that they were telling her to do it wrong) to being told by a new doctor looking at her notes that the life threatening disease she had as a child was a minor disease to which she forced him to look it up in the dictionary and telling him she was in an isolation ward as they didn't know if it was contagious and she almost died from it.

Some doctors think that patients will trust them whatever they say and therefore make stuff up as they see fit.

I was going to post a gag about flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality but it's just flogging a dead horse.

I hardly think you can write off every single GP in the country just because you've had a bad experience. My dad is a GP, he is also a specialist in Orthopaedics and works in this capacity at hospitals, and was a surgeon before he decided to go into General Practice. So where do all the GPs who also specialize in something else fit into your theory that all GPs are useless?

They also get very pissed off with people who go to see their GP having already "decided" what's wrong with them and won't listen to their advice. Ok, they get it wrong sometimes but Luu is right that sometimes you have to eliminate the possibilities first.

Also, as I used to be medical rep working for a pharmaceutical company and know that more than half or GPs won't even give drug companies the time of day (although of course there are some who do). So get your facts straight.

Where it just me, who had a bad experience, i wouldn't be. (writing them all off) This is the experience of lot's of people. Sadly primary care is becoming a refferal service, and most nhs patients are given a 4 minuite consultation. Before they are prescribed, or reffered.

There is a lot of work being done by Bupa and the other PMIs in the field of primary care, cos the situation is becoming intolearable.

The launch of NHS direct, and walk-in centres, and the growth of private gp services, points to a system that is barely able to cope with the demands that are being put on it now, let alone in the future, when the expecation of care, free at the point of provison, set against an ever ageing, and longer lived poulation and will strech the system to breaking point.

With all due respect, even if the GP is a specialist in something, eg gastroenterolgy, that will be no good if he needs to treat a swollen ankle. So no treatment occurs and the GP refers, esp if private medical insurance is avaialble.

I think even under 50% of GP's seeing reps, is too many. The national formulary, and NHS guidance on suitable drugs should be more than adequate. Reps are paid for by more expensive drugs, that are often under tested and un proven.

The reason that people are coming in 'knowing' what is wroing with them is that they are better informed, and want to take an active role in their own care. Or they have work related issues and are seeking a specific diagnosis for that. Either way progressive GP's (few and far between) work with the patients, and listen, Spend longer than 4 minuites, (God knows how), and work with the patient in coming to the diagnosis. Not the other way round. Especially when the problem is emotional or phsycological. Clearly this flies in the face of medical orthodoxy, and so is rare. But has been shown to be effective.

when I was carrying my second daughter, for months, I was itching all over, to the point I was making myself bleed, my urine was the colour of sherry & every doc I saw, tested my we & all said it's fine, quite common to be itchy in middle stages of pregnancy etc, but I knew something was wrong, in the end, I went & saw yet another female doctor & she said nothing was showing up, so I demanded a blood test as I knew it was not right.

She did a blood test & I was at the hospital on the monday for a check, so I said to the doc there, have you got my blood test, he was very arrogant & rude & said, well it's a waste as you are not jaundiced etc, he went to get the results & when he came back in, his face was as white as a ghost, he asked did I have any sleeping/baby stuff etc with me, NO!! Turns out my liver had packed up, I had got a rare condition that happens during pregnancy, that kills both mother & child & both our lives were in danger. surfice to say a few hours later I gave birth, luckily to a healthy 5lb little girl!!
