PLANS for a Sunday market in Loughton have been scrapped, following opposition from Epping Town Council.

Loughton Town Council proposed running a monthly market in response to inquiries from traders last year.

The idea was put to Epping Town Council, which runs the Monday market in the High Street, for its opinion because as a local charter market authority, the council has the right to prevent other markets from being established within a six-mile radius.Epping councillors fiercely opposed the plan which they claimed would be "detrimental" to Epping traders and the town's own weekly market.

Sunday stalls plan scrapped

By Alison Kershaw

PLANS for a Sunday market in Loughton have been scrapped, following opposition from Epping Town Council.

Loughton Town Council proposed running a monthly market in response to inquiries from traders last year.

The idea was put to Epping Town Council, which runs the Monday market in the High Street, for its opinion because as a local charter market authority, the council has the right to prevent other markets from being established within a six-mile radius.Epping councillors fiercely opposed the plan which they claimed would be "detrimental" to Epping traders and the town's own weekly market.

Epping deputy mayor Brian Rolfe said: "I think we've a duty to support our local traders and I don't care if it takes a lot of effort to find out how but I think we've got to."

Mr Rolfe added: "I do think we should resist strongly the Loughton market.

"It would definitely upset the local shops and I'm sure it would upset the market traders." The discussion was continued in a closed session.

After the private meeting Epping town clerk Bob Whittome said: "The council's view is that any additional market within the facility of Epping should be opposed because it would be likely to have a detrimental impact on trading in the town. Members agreed it should be strongly resisted, and if push comes to shove we will speak to a solicitor on how we can strongly resist."

Loughton Town Council's community committee discussed Epping's position, and agreed to abandon the plan.

Loughton town clerk Louise Fuller said: "The committee was asked to consider operating a monthly Sunday market in Loughton, and we have been looking at it.

"There are charter markets within a certain distance, and they are protected by law. If they object to us running a market, they have the right to do that in law.

"Epping has indicated they would object and so the committee has decided they can't advance this any further."

says exactly as i did epping dis allowed us to have a market

epping council fear it will disrupt there market trading and its them that has a monday market
