My understanding of the Dominican Republic is that you're advised not to leave the resort - however the resort is huge with lots of hotels, bars, shops, attractions, etc. There's a lot of all inclusive packages, for which you get coloured wrist bands, and depending upon the colour depends on which shops, bars, restaraunts, etc they're valid at.

 

Of course, this is speaking as someone that's not been there - but I've spoken to a fair few people that have.

Tbh if i went though id wanna go off the hotel complex half the point in visiting new countries to me is seeing what its like.

 

Best thing id recommend to do is ring a travel agent and discuss it with them as they will no doubt have far more info than any of us

at the end of the day though no one can stop you from leaving the resort, you're going on holiday ffs not to prison lol. but they can advise you not to leave the resort for your own safety. im guessing they probably do this so if anything happens to you its not their fault as they told you not to leave.

 

and just to point out that having a security guard with you is not as far fetched as it might seem. my uncle and his family live in the phillipines in the captial city manilla and it is really quite dangerous but they live on a very nice housing estate that is fenced off with armed guards on the gate and patrolling the paremita (sp?). i wasn't allowed to leave the estate on my own and certainly never leave the estate on foot on my own, but if i did just want to nip to the shops of something a guard would come with me.

 

yeah that might sound like me being stupid and paranoid but white westerners are a target for crime over there. some of those people are so poor they cant feed their kids so they see someone they perceive as "rich" and you don't know what they might do.

 

BUT that is in the capital city of a very poor country, NOT a holiday resort. as ive mentioned before ive never been anywhere like dominican republic so i cant talk from experiance.

We've had sound advice from a Travel Agent who has been many a time .. and it's only in specific resorts, the one we have been recommended, is cool - so please talk about my self employment people, thanks !
