right guys - i'm as thick as shit when it comes to producing so i'm gonna try and leach some free pointers from u guys.

what kind of volume levels work best for diff styles of music?

what arrangements work effectively to give a track some pace to it?

do filters help with the use of percussion?

what sort of frequences should the percussion be playing at?

what different types of percussion are there out there and do some work better than others for specified tasks?

have i left anything out?

basically once i've learned how to use percussion in a very formalaic way, i can then start to use some imagination and play about a bit. but at the moment my tracks feel empty and slow (and i'm thinking its due to the lack of percussion)

* compression compression compression compression!

* parametric EQ (experiment boosting different parts of each drum sound)

* use HP filters for things like tom toms, where the bottom-end is excessive and clashes with the kick drum

* go easy on effects (subtle use of reverb and delay can work a treat)

Other than that ... just piss around until it sounds good! There are no hard-and-fast rules for EQing drums, but some drum sounds suddenly sound really good when you boost a particular frequency range.

As for "what drum sounds shall I use" ... LOL ... I thought you were into techno mate! smile.gif If it sounds good, use it - *anything* goes! Just use trial and error mate and you'll develop your own unique style.

Personally I like to use plenty of tribal drums (congas etc) and "real" drum sounds (sampled snares etc). I also get lots of squelchy noises out of my synth, and piss around with them even more on my PC. But don't do what someone else does!

eh?

use filters on every bit of percussion if needed.

and compress the drum mix with the bass

on my (rather old) version of sound forge and cool edit pro, i cant find the compression. just wondered if some apps will name it something different shrug.gif
