Called that because bombers used to wear them?

As found on BBC's 'Word Appeal'...

Evidence suggests that the term was applied retrospectively to the flying jackets, possibly when they started to become used as fashionable garments in Civvy Street. But is this the case?''

 

So no doubt it's assosiated somewhat with the 'American Bomber' styleeeeeee planes, and the 'pilots' behind them that wore such a garment, and not actual 'bombers' (i.e. people )...
