Why is it that when you write and your paper has more paper under it your handwriting neater than when you just write with the desk underneath?

It helps even the pressure out across the end of the pen, thus the ink spreads evenly.

because the desk may not be perfectly smooth which can cause extra 'vibrations' in the nib, causing the ink to run differently - Tresh is right with what he says (although explanation might not be correct - im assuming its due to a similar kind of damping that oscillations can have? Not 100% sure either way) about the 'padding' of the paper allowing it to run a lot smoother
