Saturday saw the long awaited return of Detox in Newcastle the choice of venue have a guess.....................the Cinema. During the last four years I have endured a variety of venues from fields, warehouses and the occasional science museum but nothing of this calibre. Curiosity got the better of me and I found myself organising a ticket for this event.

A few drinks later we queued approximately 2 minutes before gaining entry. We were welcomed by two storm troopers wielding guns. This made the venue stand out even more and brought a lot of emphasis to the venue

There were 3 rooms in total each playing a variety of styles from hard dance to old skool. Our group descended on the main room where the cinema screen were projecting a variety of visuals and the floor became a sea of avid fans of hard dance. Out of 17 DJs I had only heard of 2 that were playing tonight so it would be interesting to listen to a new bunch of talented individuals. Phil Coogan was the first DJ I heard play from the front row I had the added bonus of being able to put my alcoholic drink in the cup holders.

As the tunes continued to blast out from the speakers it wasn’t until Tony De Vit’s The Dawn began oscillating that I knew I would not be able sit down much longer so off I headed with everyone else to my dancing space. To hear my favourite hard house tune being played blew me away - so thank you to the DJ who played that classic.

Sapped of energy three of us decided to look for some food. How nice the bouncers and staff were they allowed me to nip across the road to buy a 16” Margarita and a bag of chips - before you start thinking il stop you in your tracks THE FOOD WAS TO SHARE phew glad we cleared that up. Back to the venue and the clubbers who gathered outside for a cigarette were treated to a slice of pizza and a handful of chips.

All three rooms now were full and Anne Savage was due on so back to the main room and the place had a feel good factor. When Anne arrived their was a lot of praise and clapping a sign of respect from an amazing DJ. How can I tally up her set, the set was a mixture of classics and at one point the crowd began singing Sanctuary that song was fantastic. Anne certainly made an entrance and mixed away for what seemed like an eternity. But all good things must come to end her set was the best I have seen her play in over a year. Next up came the eagerly anticipated Steve Smith or Smigs as I heard the crowd shout. Now this is a DJ who I Have not heard of before so it would be interesting to see the crowds reaction. The visuals were now exploding around the dancefloor , on the ceiling on the clubbers themselves. Now this DJ knows his business. His mixing was so precise and entertaining that it makes a few well known DJ’s look like beginners. With 2:30am fast approaching I sat down to save myself for the last 15 minutes.

The music paused momentarily and then began to speed up and up and up and up and up - it must have been about 260 bpms if not more. Then Steve disappeared for a second whilst the Exorcist theme tune began to roar. The DJ seemed to be replaced by what I thought was Yoji then it dawned on me it wasn’t Yoji it was actually a Chucky mask he was wearing. The final show down definitely finished the night off the way with a bang. If you get a chance to see this guy play then I would recommend him to you, and hopefully 2006 will be the year where we’ll see him of the back of flyers for events up and down the country.

Like all events they have their positives and negatives., normally I find it easy to criticise events but I cant really say anything bad. Apart from the main arena did not have any air conditioning so it could get a little warm. The plus side to this was you were allowed outside to chill and cool off. There were a lot of positives about the events so:

The Venue:- a new experience for me and a lot of others.

The layout:- there was a lot of space for people to mingle and you could sit down when you wanted to.

The staff:- very friendly, helpful and curtious.

The DJ’s:- fantastic, they kept the rooms banging all night

The Clubbers:- The best group of people I have had the pleasure of meeting in a long time.

The Promoters:- For bringing a new meaning to clubbing, for arranging a sold out event, for donating money from the event to charity and for providing Newcastle with a well organised event. Other promoters should take a leaf out of your books, its not always about the money.

If you get a chance to go to an event organised by Detox then you’ll possibly be repeating all of what I have said above.
