Has anyone studied with OU ? I'm considering studying with them for possibly the next 3-4 years, question I'm after is (although I have a rough Idea from one of the guys here in work about how it works) can you do it online ? It doesn't matter if you can't, although it would be more beneficial to fit into my schedule what with work and other things, so I'm just wandering what I can and can't do. :)

I can't believe how cheap the OU is, aswell, it's like, £100 for a course. I thought they would be well expensive !

that is quite cheap considering my tuiton fees were £1100 for the year

however :wicked:

if youre a resident in scotland (3 or more years) you get your tuition fees paid for you by the SAAS (student awards agency scotland)

saas also give you a decent student loan, and my bursary this year is nearly twice it was last year. scotland is the place to be for education!! :happydance:

the open uni is good though maria, yeah i think they do it online as well you just gotta have a look at the website! :)

I've been on the site all morning looking at the courses I want to do, and the most expensive one I've seen so far is £235 for what I want to do, and that includes Support, Software materials including CDROMS and DVDs. I can't believe the prices - pennies.

I'm glad I'm going to do it this way and do it online instead of going to a normal university and then getting into debt with Student Loans (debt really isn't my bag !). Just awaiting back a response from the address I E:mailed. It's oh so exciting. :D

ive seen a uni advertisement which says they pay for childcare, tuition fee's and give quite a lot in bursary and thats to train to be a nurse

im going to attend the open day to check it out in march

That's cool Dani. :) I still can't believe how much better off studying with the OU is instead of actually going to a Uni and camping up there for terms and all that. OU are completely on the same level as yourself and work around YOU rather than you working around them.

I'm booking my course as soon as I hear back from them. The first course I'm doing to get a Degree is 'Life In The Oceans: Exploring Our Blue Planet' which this very course is associated with the BBC Series 'Blue Planet - David Attenborough', and then after that I'm going to gain another in 'Oceanography'. Both cover loads in Natural Sciences, Earth Science, Life Sciences and loads more, and then after that I'm going to study Ocean Mammals in the Arctic / Antarctic Oceans. I don't think I want a Career in IT anymore (f*cking shocking) ! And although the money isn't that fantastic in this field (it can take you YEARS to earn anything up to 50-70k when studying Oceans etc,) but when I was in liason with someone who's an expert on this type of life whom I forwarded my questions to, they outright told me, when you work in this area, the money doesn't matter, because the hands on experience you gain is absolutely priceless, which is what I was thinking anyway, as I am not turned on by money and certainly not driven by it.

I'm deffinitley going to stay in IT though for a few years, untill I'm fully qualified in Oceanography, which could take up to a few years, a long time away, but the rewards from then on will be so bloody worth it. I have turned into a MASSIVE Ocean geek beyond belief, and all I find I'm doing these past few weeks is researching the Oceans on the Internet, and it's such an awesome feeling wanting to get involved in these unique, natural sciences and learning about new species of different life that Scientists are overwhelmed by. :)

Oh my I have changed over the years !

You wouldn't have to go away weeks and weeks on end - you could gain this extrodinary Degree and then actually use it when your children are all grown up. I'm thanking my lucky stars I've got no commitments what so ever, nothing is stopping me to achicve what I want to do now, and I don't want any commitments for a LONG time yet !

There are loads on there Dani, just do a search for what sort of thing you want to do, and they will bring up the Criterias and pricings for you. :)

i meant when qualified its going to be another 12 years yet before shay moves on and im hoping he goes uni and want to be around for that first. so doing a course now that may change the qualifications in the future may not be worth it

but im going to have a look as still got my heart on nursing and caring

even if i have had to deal with the most awful doctors and nurses last night at whipps cross its made me more determined to want to be one

and thank you kindly maria

just looking through the help with fees page and id be eligible as being on low wage and having a child for funding so all looks good
