This convo came up on Talk Radio last time it snowed... rather funny that we're a pathetic country when it comes to things like this.

M4 was down to one lane this morning, and it was dead because people thought it an excuse to forget about work. It only took me 20 minutes longer than normal to get into work. People need to think back to 20 years ago, when there ws serious snow every year. They might stop being so pathetic then.....

It's because we excel at the middle ground:

We get snow, but nothing serious enough to actually give any serious thought to any preperations for it...so when it snows the country grinds to a halt.

We get get heatwaves, but nothing serious enough to warrant more than a yearly panicked hosepipe ban.

We get rain (oh! do we get rain), but nothing heavy enough to spend money on proper drainage, so every time it rains heavily we get flooded.

 

Plenty of other countries have worse weather conditions but because they're worse they have to actually spend money on measures to counter them...and that's the other problem...money, has anyone else ever noticed that when other countries come up with an idea for something (let's say the bullet trains in Japan for example) they'll get the funding together and get the job done properly...not so over here! we'd much rather go for the cheapest bidder and then spend the next 20 years fixing something that was shit to begin with...*sigh* just my opinion

yet i have to agree with Louise.This country is shite with things likethe weather.

Its snowed up here in Derby on n off all week and only showed its true colours now and the wee small hours of the morning!

Last time it snowed school and work places were shut.Even my Uni shut for a bit.Its shite!

 

they advise u not to travel unless absolutely necessary... well to get to places and do stuff that needs doing is necessary and most require transport to get us to and from the places.

 

just winds me up a treat that we as a country can be so pathetic.Just thank ur lucky stars ur not in Span or India or Turkey Or anywhere else that has seriously bad things happen to them!

it's always the way tho when it snows. where my mum lives, if it snows just b4 evening rush hr, wot would take bout hr and half, turns in2 a 9hr debaucle. even my work place woz un-prepared 4 the last lot of bad snow we had. the workin conditions were just a danger 2 health and safety of workers and passengers alike. like everything else in this day and age, money is the main driving machine. sure, they kept the runways and taxi-ways open, but left the stands to just turn in2 ice rinks
