From Reuters:

As condemnation came from Pope John Paul to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, jittery European nations tightened security. Washington said a letter claiming responsibility for al Qaeda and threatening another September 11-style strike could be the "precursor" of another plot against America.

Not lookin good! sad.gif

true.......but so far, only indonesia, syria and palestine have condemed the attacks.

not 1 middle east state has offered sympathy for the carnage in spain.

In quotes: Global outcry at Madrid blasts

An international wave of condemnation has followed the rush-hour bombing of Spanish trains which left scores dead and hundreds more injured.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Terrorism is an absolute evil and before it there can only be one response: absolute determination, without doubts or hesitation.

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again we see senseless killing of innocent people. Killing of innocent people cannot be justified regardless of the cause. I offer my deepest sympathy. I hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice swiftly.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We stand strongly with the people of Spain. I appreciate so very much the Spanish government's fight against terror, their resolute stand against terrorist organisations like Eta. And the United States stands with them. And today we ask God's blessings on those who suffer in the great country of Spain.

US President George W Bush

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The attacks provide further proof of the multiple and diverse sources of terrorism as a global menace, which may strike anywhere and at any time, and the need for all nations to cooperate to defeat it.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once more, this incident marks the ferocity and randomness by which terrorism strikes. We must and shall never let our guard down especially at a time when democracy is undergoing tests in various places of the world.

Philippine President Gloria Arroyo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We're absolutely appalled and obviously our hearts go out to the people of Spain at this dreadful time.

It does remind us though that the risk of terrorism is really still there and there's a long way to go in the war against terrorism and we just can't afford to be complacent, any of us.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm here to express our deep grief at this bloody, ferocious and senseless attack.

There is no justification whatsoever behind which the authors of this bestial crime can hide.

This is violence without object, without sense against which the entire international community has to mobilise itself. All the peoples of Europe are now close to Spain.

European Commission President Romano Prodi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is an outrageous, unjustified and unjustifiable attack on the Spanish people and Spanish democracy.

There is a general election due in Spain on Sunday. What happened today is a declaration of war on democracy. Let Sunday show that Spanish democracy is determined to overcome terrorism.

European Parliament President Pat Cox

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The timing of the bombings was clearly designed to wreak the greatest level of havoc... and cannot be justified by any political cause.

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, whose country holds the EU presidency

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These irresponsible acts, which can have no justification, are from every standpoint to be condemned.

French President Jacques Chirac

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This terrible attack underlines the threat that we all continue to face from terrorism in many countries and why we must all work together internationally to safeguard our peoples against such attacks and defeat terrorism.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These abominable terror acts that claimed so many lives fill us with deep sadness and outrage.

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today we stand together with all people of Europe in sorrow, but also with resolve to stop these crimes against humanity. There is no cause that can justify terrorism.

US Ambassador to the EU Rockwell Schnabel, on behalf of President Bush

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This senseless, barbaric action has again shown that the world community must even more resolutely combat terrorism.

Today, as never before, the entire civilised world must unite in the fight against this evil.

Russian President Vladimir Putin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Holy Father [Pope John Paul II] reiterates his firm and absolute disapproval of such actions that offend God, violate the fundamental right to life and undermine peaceful co-existence.

The Vatican

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Terrorism is the third world war and the nations of the free world should unite against it. What happened in Madrid proves it once again.

Raanan Gissin, spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We strongly condemn these attacks targeting innocent civilians in Madrid.

Palestinian minister Saeb Erekat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Terrorists must know that with attacks such as the monstrous and unconscionable bombings in Madrid today they will not succeed in destroying the edifice of international law and human rights the international community has been building for so many years.

Acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Bertrand Ramcharan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On behalf of the alliance, I condemn in the strongest possible terms this mindless act of cruelty and barbarism.

Nato Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We felt profound pain on learning of the criminal acts carried out at train stations in Madrid.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

Some observers say the bombings bear the hallmarks of the Islamic militant network al-Qaeda, which has threatened revenge on Spain for its government's backing of the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Spanish police found a stolen van containing an Islamic tape and seven detonators in the town of Alcala de Henares, where three of the four bombed trains originated. The other train passed through the town.

Hours after the attacks a statement attributed to the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades on behalf of al-Qaeda was sent to London-based daily al-Quds apparently claiming of responsibility.

I didn't know anything about this until I got to work this morning and was told we were having a minutes silence (we're a spanish company). For some reason we then had an extra 15 minutes break. I'm not quite sure how us sitting on our arses shows any respect or sympathy for the people involved.

The pictures in the papers really are shocking.

Oh and I realise that this is a very serious issue and I'm not joking about the event itself, but one of the old women I work with told me that she thinks it was IKEA that did it.

Anyone fancy a bongle with bungle?
