criticising a genre is one thing, claiming that it doesn't exist is another

Back on topic: where did I claim that hardstyle doesn't exist? Are you deliberately missing my point?

a new name for the same stuff?

you're implying that hardstyle is nothing new - it doesn't exist separate from the genres of hard-house and hard-trance.

seriously, no more. i have an essay to write. i'll e-mail it to you if you like? perhaps you can quote parts of my essay and criticise my economics knowledge?

but probably not.

Comments on the samples:

Hennes & Cold release ‘The Second Trip’ (http://germantrance.com/content/_rams/TTX2020B.ram)
Sounds like absolute middle of the road, generic hard trance to me. The bassline is quite "hard housey". I think you'd have to have a pretty narrow definition of hard trance not to call this hard trance.

I agree, to me 'The second trip' is Hard Trance. What the report is saying though is that this track made a massive impact when it came out because it sounded fresh and different and didnt follow the same rules as other Hard Trance tracks. In a way this tune was possibly the first 'Hardstyle' track although no-one really knew it back then. Deffinatley a track way ahead of it's time.

Trance Generators - ‘Connected’ (http://germantrance.com/content/_rams/FTS003A.ram)
Didn't mind some bits of this, except for the dodgy cliched acidy 303 sounds and over-use of the sirens. Again, sounds like a combination of hard house and hard trance. Leaning more towards hard house this time.

Now to me 'Connected' is a plain and simple Hard Trance track. It was realeased on Shougun records which is a sub-label of Fog Area and you cant really get hard trancier that Fog's. I wouldnt have included this in the report but as I stated in the other thread this report was written with contributions from members of the BOA forums and of course everyone has different opinions. Although reading the report back now I think this track was included as a means of showing what sort of tracks the Trance Generator's (Who are seen as pioneers of Hardstyle) were producingg back then.

Radium – ‘Only A Test’ (http://germantrance.com/content/_rams/FTS009.ram)
Ah the bassline is a bit more original on this one - rough as toast! It's still essentially a stomping hard house bassline though. Shame about the nursery rhyme melody that comes in at 1:40, and again, the dodgy acidy stuff later on.

Yeah this an early and probably typical 'Hardstyle' track. Im not overly keen on this tune but this kinda fits in with the stuff I play i.e the more Italian sounding Hardstyle (Yes, with nursery rhyme melodies haha!).

Again, thanks for the info Ikon, but it just sounds like a load of hard trance cum hard house to me.

No worries man! Everyone has different opinions and takes on things. I would disagree on most things you have said especially on it sounding like Hard House but then Im sure you would disagree with most things I have to say about Techno. grin.gif

my primary intention with this post was to waste your time. to frustrate you and wind you up.

You failed to frustrate me or wind me up. If you think you've wound me up in the slightest then maybe you're reading too much into my posts, or suffering from the delusion that you are the only person who has a grasp of irony.

Furthermore you wasted your own time and my time in equal proportions.

life isn't about being intellectual on message boards. its about having fun.

I'm flattered that you think I'm "being intellectual". But in fact I was having a fun discussion (which you subsequently derailed).

Oddly enough I don't get much pleasure by wasting other people's time or winding them up. Is there something wrong with me? I wish I was more like you.

Tryin to get the thread (a bit more) on track...hardstyle drives me mad, it's like Glazby with cr@ppy trance breakdowns, just as you get going the music stops and goes a bit airy-fairy. sad.gif
