Right then...oodles of apologies to any Geography lovers this may offend but it's just something I keep wondering about.

I've never been able to see the point in geography, perhaps it's because i'm shit at it (as Bungle found out on Saturday when he told me about Passion in Coalville and I said "well i've never been to Sheffield"...twat!) or perhaps it's because it's never really captured my attention but as far as I can see it's useless knowledge...why?...well perhaps if I start by explaining my use of Geography:

Unless i've been somewhere I have absolutely no idea where it is...at all...sure i've heard names of places but as far as i'm concerned anywhere i've not yet discovered is in Spain (which comes from people laughing at me when I thought that Barbados was in Spain...*ahem*), and I manage to get through life perfectly well, I don't think i've ever had a single "oh my god! it's really important for me to know where Tanzinia is!" moment...and even if I did it's hardly going to be a time critical situation where finding an atlas and looking it up isn't a perfectly reasonable solution. So why bother filling your head with where places are? I mean it's not as if they're going anywhere is it? It's not as if Wales will have cheekily scampered off somewhere else on Friday just for a bit of a chuckle (and yes I know that technically landmasses do move but unless they speed their 'continental drift' up somewhat I don't ever see it being a problem)...hhhmmmm I don't really know where i'm going with this either...oh well, just thought i'd mention it smile.gif

Geography is more than just knowing where stuff is. Map reading is cartography.

I actually thing Geography is pretty interesting, there's so many aspects of it ranging from the scientific to social studies. Anyone that thinks it's a waste of time needs their head read.

I was top of my year in Geography in yr 10.

I gave up Geography in Year 9, and now find myself doing Environmental Law. Dull as dishwater!

My teenage daughter has been kidnapped, and the people I work with may be involved in both.

I'm Federal Agent Jack Bauer and this is the longest day of my life...

True...but I was only talking about in day to day situations for the average person...it just always seemed that there was a lot of emphasis put on it when I was at school and there still seems to be a certain amount of expectation that you *should* know where places are...obviously if you're interested in it or if you're a pilot or whatever then it'll have much more relevance to you, personally it's never interested me and I don't need to know anything about it to do my job but when someone asks me where such-and-such a place is i'm still *expected* to know...why?

I mean i'm interested in Art, Computers, Poetry, Reading, Photoshop (and other important job related programs smile.gif) etc but I need all of those to do my job properly so *obviously* i'm interested in them...you wouldn't get people staring at pilots like they've got 2 heads when they say they don't know how to use Photoshop as that knowledge would be completely useless to them...so therefore why when Geography holds no interest to me...serves no use to me...and has no relevance to me should I need 'my head read'

Just wondering

To be fair Geography for the most part ain't about countries and places. It's about earthquakes, volcanoes, rocks and crap like that.

True...I was generalising...I can't really remember much about geography to be honest (perhaps unsurprisingly)...all I know is people keep saying to me "your geography's shit!"
