Well just over a month ago i spoke to my boss regarding a pay rise. As he did say when he offered me the job that in 6 months we would discuss pay as it would then be the end of the trial period. Anyway it's nearly a year now since i've started working here and when i've mentioned the pay rise, he takes it onboard and then does nothing about it. I've mentioned it a good fair few times now and it's now beyond a joke. I've worked myself into the ground and not taken a proper holiday since i started. yes i've had the odd day here and there, but never proper full time off.

Anyway speaking to my other boss he said i should speak to him regarding the pay rise and that i'm entitled to one because i'm worth it. Which put a smile on my face, only problem he went away on holiday that week so we couldn't arrange no meeting. So it will have to be Monday before i speak to him. However it shouldn't be my job to see my other boss regarding a pay rise. Then when i tell him i would like to take the rest of the week off after Easter Bank Holiday he umm's and arrr's as it's bad timing. This nearly sent me through the fucking roof, as he had just taken a week's holiday near the end of a project. Whenever i've asked for time off, it's not been when i've wanted it but more of when it's suited him. To be honest i'm sick of it. Not only is he breaking the law i'm totally warn out emotionally and physically.

I'm going to mention to him when i get back from lunch A. about my holiday, and B. about my pay rise and back dating it to when i originally asked!

Do you think i'm being unreasonable or am i being well within my rights?! At this point of time i'm just tempted to walk. I could move to Sheffield totally and temp in something totally different to what i'm doing until i can get the right job there. at the moment that looks really tempting because i'm sick and tired of being told things that just never come to fruition.

I haven't had a payrise since I started here in June 2001

not til today that is...

I've just been given a letter telling me I've been awarded an extra £860 a year! SWEET!!!!

That's about 4%. OK, so it works out to just under £70 extra a month. Less after tax, but spondoolix is spondoolix, and who am I to argue?

Any messages you may receive bear no insight whatsoever into the mind of the sender - He hasn't got one!

Maybe he doesn't think you're worth a pay rise, especially as you have intentions to leave the job.

If you are indeed worth a pay rise, surely a job more deserving of you would snap you up in or around Sheffield for the amount you would be due in a pay rise.

even though u r the employee and not the employer u still have righs u know.

dont feel anxious to speak up its ur right to. u r obviously undervalued and

underpayed which is making u unhappy in ur job..

As regards holidays ask for ur entitlement so u can book some holidays in advance.

let them know that u r worth more than the way they r treating u, its going to continue to piss u off untill u get it sorted.

its not good for u or ur department if u are not going to be able to give 100% performance to the job due to fatigue and stress.

good luck

Scream,

You havent done anything wrong mate - sadly in this day and age companies try to get more and more out of people without properly rewarding - we are all seen as 'just a resource' at the end of the day - sad, but true. (One reason I'm leaving my company soon - to go to a smaller company who will value my skills more and enable more scope for moving around the company)

One word of advice - get these agreements in writing ...

e.g. You ask Tom in 2002 if you can have a pay rise - he says "sure, in 6 months we'll review it" ... in the meantime his ass is fired and no other sod knows anything about your agreed pay rise - or if they do they say that Tom had no right to agree that with you.

Get everything in writing.

Personally I have never asked for a pay rise and never will, if I feel I am making good progress and companies dont value me enough to automatically give me percs/a rise - I move on. I would love to stay at one company for the rest of my life and constantly progress but it just doesnt happen these days and no job is safe - we are all in effect semi-permanent contractors ! Its all good to keep you on your toes though and ensure continuous improvement.
