CTW Reviewers Wub Wub Posted October 20, 2002 CTW Reviewers Share Posted October 20, 2002 Have got an interview with Ms Dynamite tuesday night. Anyone got any burning questions that they want answered? (nothing along the lines of "Why is Gay-rage such a shite, talentless musical genre?", thank you.) (ps Apparently, interview is being filmed, then packaged and sent off to tv companies. How [censored] random is that? My editor's idea, not mine....) Quote Harder. Faster. Better. Stronger. Badder. CTW Members big_ee69 Posted October 21, 2002 CTW Members Share Posted October 21, 2002 Wub I've got one: Why is Gay-rage such a shite, talentless musical genre?. Alternatively: "Certain Rap/Hip Hop and Garage artists denounce the homopobia, glorification of violence, denegration of women , and rascism implict in other artist's in these genre's [censored]. Is such [censored] EVER defendable, and do you defend it? Do you denounce it, and how far would you be prepared to go in that denunciation. Refusing to appear on the same bill, and so forth." Though i'd leave it till last cos it might piss her off!! ian
CTW Reviewers Wub Wub Posted October 21, 2002 Author CTW Reviewers Share Posted October 21, 2002 Good question, but she would simply cite the lyrics of "it Takes More" in her defence, which slams traditional UK Gay-rage values. CTW Members TidyTraxGrant Posted October 22, 2002 CTW Members Share Posted October 22, 2002 Why doesn't she still MC to Garage like a bad girl, like she did a few years ago out in Ayia Napa ? What has changed her into commercial scene, basically ? CTW Members big_ee69 Posted October 22, 2002 CTW Members Share Posted October 22, 2002 Wub, I agree but most Garage / Hip hop / urban artists, who 'denounce' the pro-violence, racist, homophobes, only do so to an extremely limited extent...lyrics in a song, saying that these brothers have no respect, whatever. What they don't do is enter into debates that question the validity of the whole genre. Refuse to be on the same labels, refuse to appear at the same gigs, attempt to stop the material being published ect ect. In the 80's people found Ska very difficult to like, cos of the racism. I am sure that many people today find Garage & Hip Hop equally difficult cos of the violence, homophobia and racism. I mean why would u want to go to gig where you might be stabbed - Ref Nelly concert in California this week!! What makes it worse is that as the vast majority of artists in Garage / Hip hop / Urban are black, it's almost as if such positions are acceptable, cos they come from Black artists. Ms Dynamite may be the acceptable face, but she has to accept that it's a very short step from her music to music that glorifies the killing of Gay people, that degrades women, and that sees violence and drug related deaths as a natural state of affairs. Ultimately the problematic genres were born from music created as a soundtrack to the drug related gang wars in the urban wastelands of LA. This does not have ANY relevance to us in Europe, nor most of the rest of the world, including most of the rest of the USA, were musical forms promote love and respect. UK Black music, has it natural roots in the Caribbean, Reggae, Soul, Funk, or from such movements in the US. We have come to a position where UK garage artists, having seen the rise and rise of the LA gang influences, have jumped on a band wagon, and are getting away with murder, literally!! There is a movement of 'mainstream' people jumping on the urban band wagon not least Kiss and the BBC. These issue have to be addressed big time. And they are not being. Lyrics that slam are not enough. Homophobes, Racists and Thugs should not be given a platform, by anyone, for any reason, and they should be condemned, and denounced at every opportunity Sorry but I feel quite strongly about this
