I think either you, or you're mate, or possibly both need to have tri-band mobile phones. Definitely one of you has to. Tri-band basically means it will [censored] in the USA.

You just send a text as you would normally, you don't need the national code.

I'm pretty sure you won't need a tri-band mobile, cos you only need one to roam in a country like the US (Use your phone in the US etc). If you are texting from the UK (Your host network), to the US (Their host network) then you should only need to do what Claire has said.

So to text 0123456789

enter +001123456789

Ie +, then country code, then their number knocking off the first digit !!

Fingers X it should all [censored] !!! smile.gif

Hmm .. I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure one of the handsets needs to be Tri-Band in order to even support a US Network scratchchin.gif

Totally correct claire. Once you have made the connection from your mobile to the recieveing station, ie that big [censored] off mast type thingy then the way the call will be relayed is by the telephone company, ie down fibre optical cabling prob !! You will only need a triband phone in the US cos there masts are set-up to recieve signals at a different frequency than those over here !!! I'll shut up now !!! laugh.gif

normally, if you use the format: +[countrycode][areacode][number] it will get there. using this format (with the + prefix) the network should just 'do the right thing'.

be warned however, there are 3 different types of digital network here in the US: GSM (albeit at a different frequency - you have 900MHz and 1800, we use 1900 here); CDMA and TDMA. the point being that even within the US, there are problems sending text messages between networks so you may have problems if your friend is not using GSM - who is their mobile phone company?

also, many operators here have set up internat mail gateways so you can send a text message to an email address and the network delivers it to the handset. e.g. my mobile email is: 4159904427@mobile.att.net (you could email me but it's cut of just now...)

the domain (the @mobile.att.net) bit will, again, deoend on the operator.

even if you can't send text from your phone to their phone, if their phone company has set up a mail gateway, you'll be able to send email from anywhere you normally send email. some US operators have a 'send message' page on their website. like this:

http://www.mobile.att.net/messagecenter/

Cheers for all the help everyone, will try this tomorrow when i will actually remember to write down her number!

Um as for the network, she's on t-mobile, so i presume it shouldn't have too much problems if it's possible at all that is!
