CTW Members TomD Posted November 27, 2002 CTW Members Share Posted November 27, 2002 This Saturday at the Liquid Room. Think it's gonna be pretty good, likes. If you can't get up to Edinburgh then make sure you're listening anyway. Should be some quality tuneage. Plus I'll try and shout "GROUP HUG" during a breakdown if I can. CTW Members TomD Posted November 27, 2002 Author CTW Members Share Posted November 27, 2002 muahaha It's not that all the "good" stuff is in Scotland, it's just massively different and a lot more underground - we don't really have your massive venues which means the atmosphere in each place is quite different, and it's we love our house music up here, whereas down south there's a lot more hard house/trancey stuff. This gig is costing £17 a ticket (although I used the power of BLAG) and the Liquid Room is about 900 capacity (that's considered quite big here) - I check some of the lineups in London and you lot get things consdiderably cheaper than we do. Digweed and co for under a tenner? Now that's what I consider a bargain. Review plus pics up on Clubbing Scotland about a week afterwards, when I get round to it. It's just a shame Mr Tong ain't gonna be there. I think just to hear his voice saying either "wwwweekend" or "eeeessential" would have made me grin immensely. Sander will [censored] rock the place. CTW Members TomD Posted November 27, 2002 Author CTW Members Share Posted November 27, 2002 By the way, FTB, I think you'd actually really like it up here. Sounds like we play a lot of your sort of music, in particular. Progression, Majestica and Do This Do That are good house music nights to look out for if you're ever up here. When there's a decent night on, the atmosphere in some clubs is amazing. When you have a dancefloor that can hold maybe 300 people at most, then you know you've got a nice intimate night and you're practically best mates with the people you're stood next to within five minutes. I eagerly await my London trip so I can compare. It's just weird that the promoters here don't really get it right - often there's two or three big things happening on the same night, and then next weekend there'll be [censored] all. But then again I'm less bothered about guest DJs, I'd just like to go along for the music full-stop, whoever it is. The residents at two of my favourite clubs in Edinburgh are amazing, and I'm happily paying to go to both their residents-only nights next month. I am making an exception for Radio 1 though ... well you know... live, showbiz, and all that...

CTW Members TomD Posted December 1, 2002 Author CTW Members Share Posted December 1, 2002 Well it was a brilliant night, everyone was well up for being live on the radio and Jon Mancini (Colours resident) was starting things off pretty well. Sander Kleinenberg came on at 1.15am and played some excellent stuff - breaky but quite electro as well - some amazing basslines and everyone was gurning from ear to ear. Then we went on air at 2am to massive cheers from the crowd; Sander carried on for maybe another half-hour then Seb Fontaine took over. Again, he was playing some good stuff (possibly not as good as Sander though). Then disaster struck when he managed to completely [censored] up a mix. Everyone in the crowd could tell the beats were going out of sync, and people were turning round to each other with pained expressions on their faces. He decided to give it up, and just cut straight into the next tune, but that wasn't the end of it, because he'd lost his confidence and again [censored] up another three or four times. "This is fast becoming one of my favourite Essential Mixes," he said on the mic to try and at least half-apologise to the crowd. We still cheered and rallied though, but I think most of the magic was lost. It was still an amazing night though, Sander K is a first-class DJ and it's just a shame that you didn't get to hear more than half an hour of him on air. CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted June 24, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 24, 2003 Never heard Seb [censored] up before - shame about that Tom! I want to have the guy's babies, I've seen him 4 or 5 times now (over the course of several years, his style has changed quite a lot) but always thought he was the absolute bollocks. I love the driving, techy, housey, proggy stuff he plays at Type. I think the driving/dark end of funky house is well under-represented - it's always good to see DJs who aren't completely polarised towards "slow funky" or "banging hard" (or in fact purist techno!) CTW Members TomD Posted June 24, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted June 24, 2003 i hear enough people slag him off, what with him switching from trance to what he plays now. i mean fair enough, cunt for doing that and everything, but i happen to like his choice of tunes regardless, and although he's a [censored] radio presenter, the music on his show is quality and when i saw him DJ (this was last November by the way, siggers just decided to drag this one up) it was such a disappointment to hear the [censored]-ups. shame. wouldn't stop me seeing him again though, if i have the opportunity. think i seem to be in a minority amongst my mates, in that i actually like him! CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted June 24, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 24, 2003 Yes every bugger seems to slag him off. Is this purely because he switched styles? I don't see the big deal. As I always say, success breeds contempt. Better to go from euro-trance to funky than vice versa in my opinion! I'm not into this "selling out" thing. If he got bored of trance, but carried on playing it just for the money, now that would be selling out. But he blatantly likes funky so good luck to him. CTW Members TomD Posted June 24, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted June 24, 2003 success does breed contempt, agreed. but then a similar thing happened with Picotto - he went from producing trance wank and all that, to doing his techno thing that he does now, and i really can't stomach it. same thing with judge jules, really. CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted June 24, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 24, 2003 Why, is Picotto's techno stuff any good? I've only heard a couple of his technoey tracks and thought they were seriously mediocre. They sounded like they were written by someone who used to write trance, but had recently heard techno and thought "cool, I can do that". But, if he did really good techno, then at the end of the day I couldn't care less that he started out doing dodgy euro trance! We all have to make a few pennies. CTW Members TomD Posted June 24, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted June 24, 2003 aye, suppose you're right, i just can't get the thought of that horrible "Komodo (Save A Soul)" out of my head. *shudder* dunno if his techno stuff is any good or not. i wouldn't mind seeing him to actually make up my mind about him, but then again i wouldn't pay more than a tenner, so likelihood of me seeing him? hmmmmm, slim to none!
