RE: Installing a new O/S

You should partition your drive so ONLY the O/S sits on your C: drive - and never store documents in My Documents etc.. (or relocate this) - always store your important files on other partitions (I have 5 - Boot, Media, Work, Personal, Program Files) - I dont even put installed Program Files on C: ...

Then you can just wipe C: whenever you want (should you reformat when installing new O/S

The amout of times I've seen some fuckwitt go round a mates house and fuck up their machine un-necessarily is unreal. No need to lose ANYTHING - even if your drive isnt currently partitioned you can partition it (so long as you have enough space) and move off your docs/music to new partition before trashing the O/S. (or even better buy an external USB2 200GIG HD - this is what I'm doing so I can use on desktop, laptop, work desktop, another mates PC...)

THINK BEFORE YOU TRASH

ps. ACCEPT the fact you need to re-install every 6 months to get a clean system smile.gif Or even better - burn an image post install/config to DVD...

pps. NEVER bother installing an O/S of the same version over the top - it leave loads of shite behind which you will never have the confidence to delete - also the install takes 2-3 times longer !!!

ppps. Remember to save your favourites off - just a straight copy of the folder to one of your other partitions, Remember to export your outlook express data files (if you have proper outlook ensure you have your .pst files NOT on C:, else again copy), remember to copy across any My Documents (i dont use it at all), remember you will need to type several passwords back in on fresh install - so have them to hand ! (e.g. pop3s)

However, people are very much tied into windows now - but all I'm saying is have best of ALL worlds... (Mac is on my wish list as well for music production (possibly) - one day..)

If and when I start my new job i'll be playing with Redhat ES, so that should get me back up to speed with it.

I've got no intention of getting a Mac for the moment as Cubase and Reason 2.5 are available on the PC (not that i know my way around them in any way shape or form yet)

I started out using Macs (about 12 years ago now! Jeebus!) and it was only a few years ago that I had to start using PC's...when I was hearing all the crap that people have to do to keep them running I honestly thought someone was playing an elaborate practical joke on me!...I still can't believe how crap they are...as you say people are tied into them, i've (unfortunately) GOT to have a PC as the 3D animation program I use is PC only, but using the thing is such a bloody headache...thank god i've got my iMac downstairs with a real operating system on it tongue.gif

That used to be true, but Windows is a million times better these days.

History aside, the Mac vs PC thing is very personal. I am in the opposite position to yourself - I have to use a Mac, but hate it, and much prefer using PCs.

Windows XP has never crashed on me. MacOS X has (complete hangs, sometimes with cryptic error message boxes) but to be fair not very often. (I use XP a lot more than OS X.)

I think a lot of it's down to what you first learned...sort of like you're native language smile.gif and since I started on Macs i'm a Mac person through and through. Like you say you've had bad experiences with Macs, and i've had bad experiences with PC's, it colours your opinion of the whole system...personally I hate Windows XP, I find it unstable, patronising and yet another example of Microsoft doing what they do best...nicking other people's ideas and implementing them badly...but that's just my opinion, I suppose it could be suggested that if I really gave it a chance and if I really knew what I was doing on a PC I wouldn't have so many problems with them...but I doubt it smile.gif
