Blink - i think you would be ideal for interviewing / reviewing etc. You have a good writing style & that counts for most of it. As for questions to ask the members can always come up with suggestions like we did for lab4.

Here's an interview with M-Zone I did for UK-Scene ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How and when did you get into DJ'ing?

I've been Dj'ing for 18 years now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You've played at some of the best venues worldwide but which one stood out the most for ya?

WEMF in Canada

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following on from the last question, who has been your favourite promoter to [censored] for and who throws the best parties?

For me its Stuart Walker from Dizstruxshon, Then again I do help him run his night!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UK44 was, and probably still is, the UK's best Hard Trance label. Why did it disappear when Trance was becoming more popular and are there any plans to resurrect the label?

Unfortunately my distributor felt it right not to give me any profits from its success. We sold over 10,000 records, and didn't see a penny. I wasn't prepared to take my artist through it again so I let them go and do there own stuff, and set up Warning records which only lasted 3 releases as the distributor went bust.

I now help Marcus Keas @ everlasting records in Germany with Fate & Rewire. When I am confident enough I'll star another label up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are seen by many as the godfather of Hard Trance in the UK and although you have played for all of the major underground promoters you have been overlooked by the big trance clubs such as Gatecrasher and Gods kitchen. Does this bother you, and if you were given the chance would you play for them?

I've been asked recently to play for Gods Kitchen, but I'm in two minds. I think Big Super Clubs over commercialise the scene. And eventually kill it… My Scene is healthy, I like to keep it that way!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are your views on the present Hard Trance 'sound'. Hard Trance seemed to slow down from around 155-165 bpm to around 150 bpm almost overnight in 98, why do you think this was?..

  1. When the credibility of the music is at risk, it changed styles.1998 was Club Trance as Hard Trance producers lost faith in the scene, because it doesn't want to become a victim of its own success.
  2. UK producers tried to copy the sound, but really struggled to get it right, they over produce. Or produce fluffy vocal [censored].
  3. Bad influences, UK bookings for German producers to play @ Gate Crasher, etc (They hear UK Dj's play fluff and that's what they thought we liked!) So they compromised and out came Club Trance.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many Underground labels such as Overdose and Tracid Traxx are now massive mainstream labels and every Judge Jules wannabe is playing them. Do you therefore think there is still an 'Underground' Hard Trance scene and if so how can the Underground distance itself from the mainstream circuit.

Don't really play them labels now, that was 1 or 2 years ago… Aren't they slow????

We've already moved to a new sound …. We are underground…

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With most other big name Hard Trance DJ's concentrating on other styles i.e. Mark EG - Techno, Vortex - Tech-Trance, Sharkey + Energy - Freeform, that leaves yourself and Cally + Juice as the only main 'Big name' DJ'S flying the flag for the Hard Trance sound, do you think it's time for some new blood to be introduced into the scene?

Mark EG - Techno,

No, When he plays at events in the UK he plays London Techno & Techno Trance.

Vortex - Tech-Trance,

Hard Trance

Sharkey + Energy - Freeform,

UK Hard Trance would not get played in Germany.

Cally + Juice,

Commercial Hard Trance - A Compromise.

All these fall under the banner of Hard Trance in some way.

My music is for open minded people who love to party, isn't that what it's all about ?

There is always room for more DJ's here …. But make your own style….

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, what is you're all time favourite tune, label and producer?

Not telling you…. This time I'm not giving it away, for someone to make a mess of it!

M-Zone 17-10-2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to M-Zone for taking the time out to speak to us.

for more likely for than against - part of the interviewers art is to make the interviewee feel comfortable - if you know the person being interviewed then that'll be that much easier.

I'd love to try but I'm pretty shy in myself so interviewing big DJ's would probably result in me soiling my pants. I'll give anything anything go once tho!

"So, Fergie! What went thru your mind when the lovely young lass in the front row threw her bra at you?"

(superstardom beckons - I can feel it!!)
