ID Cards

What does everyone think about these? Personally I think it's a perfectly reasonable idea and feel that it won't really introduce any more Orwellian facets to society than there are already...but some people seem to be freaking out about the idea?

Any opinions chaps?

I'm fine with the Idea, one of my mates though, he really doesnt want it. I think hates the idea of having information on him stored on some computer somewhere, and the idea of this really pee's him off especially with the almost certain possibilty of it including biometric data...

I think the positives on this really outweigh the negatices on this one!

Bollocks to this invasion of my privacy.

I think the less the state have to do with people the better.

I'm still not sure why our government insists on fighting for freedom of countries like Iraq, whilst at home they are restricting our freedom.

I'm possibly being either ignorant or really short-sighted on this but I don't really see how these cards are an invasion of anyone's privacy or a restriction of their freedom?

The cards are going to contain (as far as I know) Your name, address, age, sex, blood group, and possibly biometric data and criminal record. Now, aside from the criminal record and biometric data bits, how is this different from what the cards will replace (drivers licence and passport) or any one of the credit cards/store cards/donor cards/id cards we already carry around? And if you do any kind of internet shopping (as I do) then some of this information will already be on databases all over the world so why is it ok for a shop to have access to it but not the government?

I think the cards would be useful in far more ways than they'll be detrimental...and that the assumption that the government will use this information for some dark draconian purpose to be a little paranoid...after all haven't they got better things to do than worry about normal people?

I'm worried that this data can be used in ways we don't expect, possibley infringing on freedom.

I'm worried that the data could fall into the wrong hands, e.g. terrorist groups acquire the information.

I'm worried that if we end up with an extreme government in the future that these cards would be abused or the data held could be used against people.

How will it actually make me any safer than I already am?

How will it benefit me to produce my identity card when required?

Store cards data is limited and not in the hands of the government, whom control the land and those that live in it. Stores just put stuff on their shelves that the data suggests is selling well.

Will it stop terrorists?

Will it have an effect on the crime rate?

Who will actually benefit from these cards?

It also seems a little over the top to insist that everyone have an ID card because of some bogus assylum seekers.

It's going to cost around £29 for the privalage and they'll be coming into use sometime around 2013 so I've heard.

Massive waste of time to be honest. Can't see it helping anyone but the government. I'm moving to Iran, should have more freedom there. wink.gif
