Because it's cheaper than the £80 passport ... or maybe another backdoor tax!

I think the government would try to recoup the 6 Billion they have and will spend on the planning and deploying of yet another nail in the coffin for privacy.

I'm worried that this data can be used in ways we don't expect, possibley infringing on freedom.

I'm worried that the data could fall into the wrong hands, e.g. terrorist groups acquire the information.

I'm worried that if we end up with an extreme government in the future that these cards would be abused or the data held could be used against people.

How will it actually make me any safer than I already am?

How will it benefit me to produce my identity card when required?

Store cards data is limited and not in the hands of the government, whom control the land and those that live in it.  Stores just put stuff on their shelves that the data suggests is selling well.

Will it stop terrorists?

Will it have an effect on the crime rate?

Who will actually benefit from these cards?

It also seems a little over the top to insist that everyone have an ID card because of some bogus assylum seekers.

Does anyone really believe that the government can't get their hands on this information, should they really want to use it in some dodgy way, anyway?

Yes i'm worried about information getting into the hands of terrorists...but ID Cards with encrypted chips in the have got to be more difficult to reproduce than bits of paper...and part of the reason i'm for the ID Cards is that it will hopefully curb the frankly worrying rise of identity theft that terrorists and fraudsters ARE involved in.

At the risk of sounding xenephobic the other reason i'm keen to see these cards introduced is to help with the illegal immigrant problem...I know that the whole situation certainly isn't as cut and dried as rabble rousing rags like the Daily Express make out but to be perfectly honest i'm sick of seeing people like me who are honest, hard working and pay their taxes getting f*ucked over in preference of someone who's over here because they know this government is under pressure to look after them.

And what about the rest of Europe? They've either already got ID Card systems in place or will have soon and they're not having any trouble. Now I know that comparisons to how somethings run in another country isn't a particularly accurate way of reading how it will work here...and i'm certainly not defending the governments bungling (sorry dude, no offence wink.gif 'tis merely a turn of phrase) of other major public reforms like public transport, education, health, road taxation etc...but i'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt in this case as it does seem to be in the publics interest.

I don't think they're saying it'll stop terrorism or make you safer per-se...but it'll consolidate a lot of useful information in one place and, hopefully, make things more difficult for terrorists, fraudsters and general evildoers...isn't that a good thing?

To be honest, no I don't think it's good and nor do I think it'll actually make the blindest bit of difference in the fight against "terrorism" or whatever future governments will be fighting.

By 2013 I'm sure that the national ID card will be a great addition to my wallet affording me safety where ever I go and the ability to identify myself to the authorities at their whim. Although it is currently said that it will not be made an offence to refuse to show the card when asked, (I wonder how long that freedom will last?) What would the point in having the card be if you don't need to show it?

What is next after the ID cards, (they surely will not be the fix to this countries problems)? A chip under the skin, camaras in the home?

I mean, will this card, with my identity sitting on it, actually make Britain safer, stop "illegal immigrants", thwart terrorist attacks, etc...?

I guess it might be handy in identifying the corpse of suicide bomber, should they have remembered to carry it on their fateful day.
