CTW Members Aleksandra Posted April 11, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 11, 2003 Hi James Once, a long time ago, we "chatted" on here and you mentioned that you know and like G-Bar in Liverpool. Not sure if you were referring to upstairs or downstairs (because the difference in music and atmosphere is huge, isn't it?) Are you aware of any club in London which is like G-Bar upstairs? That is my ideal club, ideal crowd and ideal music however going to Liverpool all the time is very tiring....I'd love to find a place like that in London if there are any. Not sure how I would describe the music, I guess funky house, lots of vocals but still very hard baseline etc. It's not "soft" music by any means. Some of the tracks are similar to Garlands funky room, but again, much harder/deeper and not so "fluffy" (I'm sure I'm inventing completely new terminology here....I hope it makes any sense!) Can I extend this question to anyone else in London, can you help me out with any suggestion? What London clubs seem to term "funky" is always some sort of acid jazz or latino driven sound basically nothing to do with house music. Examples of G-Bar "anthems" (I guess most of you won't know this as you're mainly into HH, but worth a try?) - tracks like "Shined on me" (Praise Cats), "Underground" (Steve Lawler), "Reckless Girl" (Beginnerz), "Keep me safe from harm" (?)to name some of the more commercial ones. Cheers guys
CTW Admin James Posted April 11, 2003 CTW Admin Share Posted April 11, 2003 Watch this space hun - i'm currently trying to get out to more funky bars mid-week in London to try and find these places - i'm in the same position - upstairs in G-bar is UNREAL/amazing atmosphere so i too am looking for more places like this. I've suddenly realised that there are loads of bars/clubs i've still not yet been to - especially in the proper funky arena. Last night was class at Nylon but it was older funky stuff - i'm going to ask the guys who run it what they do at their TWENTY other bars - apparently they are all themed differently catering for different age groups/types of people. I'm deffo going back to Nylon to review it properly / take pics for them so will ask more about the other bars then and also general question about the scene in general. We're covering hardhouse pretty well now and i've realised we need to get other stuff covered too as there is a huge demand for it - also i cant believe that g-bar is the only decent funky house club in the UK - its my mission to find them ! CTW Members Aleksandra Posted April 11, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted April 11, 2003 Ok thanks for that, I'll "watch this space". I follow your board almost every day I just rarely post. So you like upstairs as well! Wicked. My boyfriend and I go all the time as we've got loads of mates there - well, most of the people upstairs and there are amazing afterparties every time. Next time you're going we should really try to meet up, yep? Cheers James, I really look fwd to CTW funky nights
CTW Admin James Posted April 11, 2003 CTW Admin Share Posted April 11, 2003 yeah DEFFO need to meet up - and yes I LOVE that type of Funky they play there - i think there are loads of different types of funky - some clubs 'have it', like Gs, some simply dont understand. Me and my house mate even tried to go up the local litten tree to get a slot playing PROPER funky and they didnt want to know / hadnt heard of it / didnt think their people would like it - LOSERS! DEFFO need more proper funky in london - its got to be around and if it isnt i hope one day we can all inject london with proper funky like that in liverpool/Gs/Gb.. have i got any pics of you yet ??? surely i must have bumped into you last year ??? CTW Members Aleksandra Posted April 11, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted April 11, 2003 You wouldn't have any pictures of me directly but you can see me on Gurn. I went to Extreme Euphoria at Heaven and RickD took some photos. If you look for a girl with long dark hair in a "slashed" red top, there's 2 pics of me & boyfriend and one of me & some random Aussies. Ok let's start a mission to funkify London in 2003 If we bump into something cool you'll be the first to know!

CTW Members Aleksandra Posted April 23, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted April 23, 2003 Isn't Pacha meant to be an extremely up-its-own-arse club? I've heard that it's 'glitz central' and that doesn't really fit in with my idea of clubbing.... If it's a kind of place where girls wear high heels & have handbags on their shoulders, and guys are wearing white shirts and shoes, it's not going to be much fun. What do you think?
