cus i do - its not ment in a derogrative way (altho it probably is v much that) but hardhouse/trance is all about the moment and playing big tunes and simple mixing. v few hard dance dj do sumthin intelegent with thier sets imo. plus hard dance doesnt seem to take itsself as seriously as other club genres

hard dance isnt about being serious tho....

A lot of people that listen to techno (for example) are really anal about their music, wheras hard-dance styles are all about fun and energy.....

I agree especially when Sarah PVC had been on a mssg board to promote CTW and they jumped down her neck about it cos they were all techno lovers, i mean wtf - its fuckin music u can like other types aswell!! If u ask me that kind of thing is sad, tho i gotta say there are some people who like techno who arent like that (ie mr happy and tom d) so im not over generalising!!

Would class myself in that as well - Umek is absolutly amazing, and went to see Carl Cox @ my student union a few weeks back and he was just as good - techno djs ARE far more talented, but they still love their music....too many people get too worked up about it and forget why they go to a club in the first place....

totally

but its not just that that i'm on about - its the wholestyle of it. like u dont c cybors in a house/techno night like u do in a hard house night. the target audience is different 4 techno and house than it is 4 hardhouse (i'm not saying hardhouse is a young or childish audience, but compared the the crowd carl cox (for example) pulls its a much younger audience)

u get my drift

i do think its good how different music styles have differnt clubbing styles, but it can also make going to a club outside of ur genre a bit daunting (sp?) as well as aiding the genre devide

Bingo - hardhouse/trance isnt about being anything but fun - some people like to dress up to make the experience more fun, some dont - its all swings and roundabouts, but I thinky ou DEFINATLY hit the proverbial nail on the head with the target audience comment!

But as has been (slightly) mentioned above, there are quite a few people that are open minded and like a bit of everything - techno is slowly creeping into the hh scene more and more at the moment - if you listen to an Andy Farley set now and compare it to 12 months ago, you would think it was a different DJ!

glazby dropped d.a.v.e the drummer's hydraulix no.9 in his set last night. sure sign that things are going techy.

hh is great for the energy and stuff in a club, but to be honest i can't listen to it at home at any reasonable volume, i just feel *dirty*. LOL. get me some techno on. totally see what you're saying tho mr happy; i played some hh to one of my flatmates the other day (trying to convince her to come to the next weekender) and she just looked at me totally disgusted. play her some techno however and she seems to find it acceptable. admittedly i did stick on some really bouncy stuff which isn't exactly everyone's cup o joe.

so in no uncertain terms yeah i agree with the subject line but like yourself, it's not derogatory or owt.

i agree with what mr happy is saying.

i gotta admit, when it comes to the techno i like, i get very anal about it, cos i dont agree with the way some stuff gets classed as techno.

to me, techno is the sound of jeff mills, ritchie hawtin, maurizio, adam beyer, surgeon, james ruskin, steve bicknell, jay denham, robert hood and the djs that play at Lost.

i find all this chris liberator, dave the drummer, syay up forever stuff a bit of a load of old bollocks to tell you the truth. its just hard club tunes that dont fit into your hardhouse/hardtrance genre so now people have started lumping it in as techno.

techno to me is all about creating something new and experimental, not just a really hard banging clubtrack.

just my tuppence worth...lol thumbs.gif

Wub's Word

IMO, much as I hate to admit it, most hard house tracks are very much by the numbers. There is very little innovation in the way they are put together, and in some cases it is almost as if a paint-by-numbers style of construction is being used.

DJ's like Anne Savage and Andy Farley are pushing the boundaries somewhat by incorporating techno elements into their sets and productions (Andy Farley & Bk - Face Facts is a good example)

Its hardly pushing boundaries tho - fusing 2 genres together and getting something thats not as good as either is a step backwards surely??? Its like getting an answer of 3 when you do 2+6

Every scene has its style and demographic.

I'm pretty open minded when it comes to dance music. With the exception of jungle and UK garage (tho some of that is alright too) I like a bit of everything. Obviously my true loves are house and prog, but I like bits of techno, trance, DnB, ambient, chill out stuff, and (even laugh.gif ) HH. There's good and bad bits to every genre.

For me, HH is an energy thing. I used to love it when I was younger, but as I've piled on the years (and the pounds haha), I lost interest for a while. A lot of stuff's getting me interested again, but it's for the DJs, and the music. I haven't got the energy to go bonkers for 8 hours and the whole "harder! faster!" thing just doesn't do it for me. I'm not being funny when I say (exceptions like srah pvc apart haha) I'm sure q a fwe of you who are 18 or 19 may feel the same when you're 10 years down the line!

There's a lot of innovation in every scene msuic wise, but I still maintain (and this is only due to the simplicity of the music and not the skills of the djs) that HH is a lot simpler and easier to construct a set for than house or prog or techno. It's all about maintaining energy levels, which isn't hard with the speed of the music. Which is why those who innovate and show variety are the ones that grab my attention.

Don't get me wrong - bad house and prog sets can be deathly boring (same as anyhting else), but when they're good they're amazing, and the layers and levels of sound in a set are incredible. Anyone who's seen Sasha and Digweed b2b or Lawler or Lottie will testify to this.

So.... in answer to Mr Happy's question (eventually) - they're not IMHO as 'refined' but that's no bad thing - the sounds suits the music and the crowd. It's the simplicity that makes it attractive.... smile.gif
