well, as with most things, it's not black and white.

 

i personally find it ironic, at least, when society says "he killed somebody . that is wrong, so let's kill him"

 

like many people, i'm against the death penalty but i have no idea how i would react or change my opinion if a capital crime happened to somebody close to me. i just hope that's an issue i never have to deal with.

 

innocent people are executed. that's a fact. i suppose, if you are pro-death penalty, you are comfortable with a few innocents dying in the cause of society's greater good.

 

also, it's a simple fact that the death penalty is not a deterrent to crime, generally speaking. most pro-death penalty advocates respond "well it's definitely a deterrent on the individual executed - they'll never murder again". that is true. sounds great as long as you are not the person being strapped into the electric chair full in the knowledge that in about 3 minutes you're going to die an 'innocent' person.

 

however, if you are pro death penalty, i assume as i said, that you don't mind a few innocents getting killed because the death penalty is good for "society as a whole". well, if that's the case surely you also have to look at the deterrent effect on society as a whole - in which case, you would have to come out against the death penalty. i think this often smacks of the pro-penalty lobby wanting to have their cake and eat it.

 

this is a bit of a ramble as usual but this is the 'serious' forum after all. perhaps we should change the name of the forum to the Elevated Bullshit Forum?

 

i think many people would consider their view on death penalty differently if life in prison meant life in prison. sounds a bit trite but i think it's true...

I just think that the whole tragedy has been exarcerbated by the media. The story has become nothing more than a media circus. It has portrayed perfectly the problem with the media. That being, that as soon as an exec sitting in an office somewhere decideds that a story is important then that is all we are gonna hear about.

 

Don't get me wrong, it is a tragic event and my thoughts go out to the friends and families involved. However, this may sound harsh, but children have always gone missing and will always go missing, because there are those sorts of people in society. This mass hysteria has been artificially created by the press and as soon as this story is off the news people will forget about it. So who has really been helped in the long run? The perpetrator(s) has had free advertising of his crime, but no more.

I am also pro capital punishment. Simply because I believe that there are some crimes which are so heinous that the perpetrator forfeits their right to live.

prision does seem cushy, and probably is in some cases. But it's the stuff we don't see but kinda know about. Like they'll probably get the [censored] kicked out of them for it as it's strange how inmates have this kinda standard. It's ok to rob banks but to kill children then the bank robbers will probably kick the [censored] into the child killers.

That doesn't happen that often though because they are segregated and get protection.

 

The other inmates do try though, which I totally approve of, a lot of the time murderers and rapists n that get cut accross their face from ear to ear so when they get out they are recognisable....I think this sort of thing should be standard and reckon it would seriously reduce repeat offences if people were brandished with some sort of mark that could be easily recognised.

Sounds harsh but I hope that they were, the sooner they were killed the less suffering they would've had to endure at the hands of these c*nts, who knows what they did to them.

I too have been on the recieving end of a lot of different abuse from various people and although what they have done to me is bad and does affect me at times still, i dont know if i could have their death on my mind...the things done to e were bad but i still dont think i could get that off my brain if that was to happen!!

 

Im all for people bein punished and even the death penalty for people who murder etc and do the things that were done to me but for me personally id prefer the people who did stuff to me to be put in prison and for them to suffer there for the simple fact that i dont want even the possibility of their death on my conscience/affecting me theyve already fukt me up once, i dont want them to have that hold on the rest of my life!!
