Given all the trouble in the world....

I'd eradicate religion, promote elightenment and give people the strength to act on their conscience rather than thousands of years old doctrine.

...lets say for the sake of argument, you were personally given the task by aliens who were gonna destroy the earth if you didnt succeed. but if you did succeed, you would be given the reward of joining the 'interplanetary union'...

I wouldn't know where to start.

It would be a major responsibilty if I / we were had the 'powers' to make the world a better place and if something were to go wrong and things fluctuated to worser situations, it would be in your hands !

Things are never as simple as you want them to be.

As others have said, this would be something that needs alot of time to think about !

Wish I'd have thought of it, but Kether is right, religion is the cause of most of the trouble that we see in the world today. He's hit the nail on the head.

If everyone was enlightened, then maybe we also wouldnt have 3rd world countries, who are experiencing famine and disease ravaging their people as we would all be looking after each other, rather than ourselves.

No but the Al-Qaeda do, all in the name of Islam. This is an exerpt of an al qaeda manual found in a members home in manchester

"These young men realized that an Islamic government would never

be established except by the bomb and rifle. Islam does not

coincide or make a truce with unbelief, but rather confronts it.

The confrontation that Islam calls for with these godless and

apostate regimes, does not know Socratic debates, Platonic ideals

nor Aristotelian diplomacy. But it knows the dialogue of

bullets, the ideals of assassination, bombing, and destruction,

and the diplomacy of the cannon and machine-gun.

The young came to prepare themselves for Jihad [holy war],

commanded by the majestic Allah's order in the holy Koran.

[Koranic verse:] "Against them make ready your strength to the

utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror

into (thehearts of) the enemies of Allah and your enemies, and

others besides whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know."

"

If people were enlightened they wouldn't feel the need for religion. Of course there will always be nutters but there's nothing quite as powerful as a rallying cry than a religion and nothing that can inspire such immediate hatred as diamterically opposed views that can never be debated.

enlightened to what? unsure.gif

Enlightenment was a stage that the western civilisation went through during the 18th century where traditional beliefs were challenged by philosophy and reason.

It's also what Bhuddists aspire to, and they don't believe in Gods and are non-violent.

Religion is just plain dangerous. Left in the hands of the uneducated leads to attrocities.

Exactly, Islam being a case in point.

Give a religion which in its main scripture states that this is your last chance or you all die to a load of savages and look what happens.

Although, the Christian fundamentalists that run the American Government aren't far behind.

But how would you eradicate religeon?

I thought in your hypothetical situation we had "the power".

If not, ethnic cleansing and book burning does it for me.
