if you mean phlegm, as in the stuff you cough up, then the use of it is to help get rid of nasty bugs in your throat. Throat is naturally covered in mucus anyways an if anything irritates it then the natural reaction is to cough and if bad enough cough up phlegm, whihch contais lots of the stuff annoying your throat.

and so by coughing it up you shold feel ebtter.
