DJ Kris Kelly.......................

Well it all started at a tender age of 7 whilst on holiday in Cornwall with my parents. Michaelstow Holiday Village to be exact with a nightly mobile disco called Channel 5 Roadshow. I can't remember the DJ's name, but I can remember him being fat! He used to baby-sit me whilst my parents got drunk at the bar............BASTARDS! Whilst being looked after, I used to hand him 7" records and control the lights. Huh! Lights, more like some par cans and a set of rope lights all controlled by a 4 way light chaser with about 8 effects. After my holiday that was it, I was hooked! I pleaded with my parents for some decks of my own for Christmas.

 

Still at the tender age of 7, Christmas came. I woke up that morning to a big brown box (no puns please) in the living room. Yes I thought to my self, decks yes decks. Nope I got a mountain bike, I live in Liverpool and I got a bloody mountain bike. Where in Liverpool are their any mountains.

 

April 5th came, Birthday time. Yet again I woke up to another big brown box, I thought this must be it. YES! My first set of real decks. I remember them now, blue built in decks with three flashing lights on the front. Nothing fancy like pitch control or cross fader, just 4 twisty volume controls for the two turntables, microphone and master volume. That was it, I was raiding the parents record collection for 7" records that I had never even heard before.

 

Up until the age 13 I spent all my pocket money on choons brought to you by the ever famous artists like 2 Unlimited, Right Said Fred and not forgetting Kylie. At this age I was ready to move on, I was a teenager on a mission to be the biggest DJ in the world. My style of music changed for the better and I started buying Funky House and Old School choons.

 

I started doing mobile disco's with my friend James (now known as DJ James H, one of the DJ's from Rezonance Q). It started just being for family, but quickly moved onto friends and friends of friends. Jay was 3 years younger than me and was still learning everything I had learnt since I was 7. In turn we spent everything we had on more choons just to build our record collection up even more, but wait the next thing we knew CD's were now all the rage! So to follow suit we plugged together to buy a mixer and 2 CD players (still no pitch).

 

At 16 and still doing the mobile, it was time for me to start making that little bit more money to fund my record buying habits. British Telecom was my first real job doing applications for the all new BT Charge Card, pretty boring really so I'm not going into too much detail. At one of our staff parties I volunteered to DJ.

 

Bar Zero, North John Street, Liverpool. It was my first ever live gig in Liverpool City Centre playing on a Thursday night. There was not many people from the general public in but the BT staff made up for that. Well 12 O'clock came and one of the bar staff asked to speak to me, he said that he had just got off the phone to a DJ who was working up the road and that he wanted to meet me. Wow I thought, this is it, my big break. Later that night I went to meet this DJ in a new bar which had only just opened a couple of weeks before. At first sight I could not help but laugh as this bloke could just about see over the decks. DJ Kirk F was his name and sure enough he offered me my first job.

 

Batys, North John Street, Liverpool. Kirk and I worked at Batys together for just under 3 years, we renamed ourselves to The Special K's (if you can't guess why I'm not telling) and played at loads of other venues which their are too many to list here.

 

Unfortunately I had too leave because I joined the Royal Air Force. I won't go into this too much but let's put it this way, it was the biggest mistake of my life.

 

When I left the RAF in March 2002, I started to make my comeback. I went straight on tour around the world playing in various clubs in Ibiza, Germany, Spain and Tenerife.

 

I have recently been in contact with DJ Kirk F and we are in talk of getting back together and forming the Special K's again (watch this space).

 

Right now I'm fully booked playing loads of places in and around Liverpool, but hope to get a UK tour going soon.
