a car pulled out the sliproad with a couple and their child and of course the bmw smashed into it....

Yeah it was big news, they closed off the A23 that sunday. the BMW was travelling southbound and flew over the central reservation, flipped and landed on a land rover travelling north.

One of the people I work with has a mate in the Fire Brigade who attended, and it was described as the worst incident that many of them had ever seen.

there is speeding safely, and then there is speeding stupidly

these boy racers were stupid

Personally i don't believe that speeding is driving dangerously, it is driving at excessive speeds which is dangerous

having laws telling people not to go above a certain speed is asking for trouble imo because of certain peoples mindsets of its cool to break the law. The entire speed limit etc laws in this country needs to be rethought out imo. possibly a recommended speed limit instead would be a far better system imo. However i'm going to contradict myself a little here and say that this isn't the case for all roads. there is no easy way to prevent this sort of incident happening again, and i personally doubt it will ever be sorted out in my lifetime at least

My dads opinion on the speeding issue is one that i think would be one of the best ways to do it:

breaking the speed limit is not an offence

having an acccident is

if you are in an accident then you are automatically guilty and therefore have to pay a fine or some other sentence unless you can prove that it was not your fault (ie the guy went into the back of you which under normal circumstances should be easy to prove)

the sentence you receive should be a set amount, which has more added on depending on the conditions, eg killed some1, was on mobile, was driving at dangerous speeds etc etc

I also believe that running some1 over and killing them should be classified as murder if it was their fault

but unfortunately due to the politicians lining their pockets with the money from catching people who speedi doubt that nething drastic will be done with the law on this issue

I was going to post a gag about flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality but it's just flogging a dead horse.

nice idea ben but very naiive

our whole legal system is based on innocent until proven guilty... you can't change that just for one particular type of crime...

I do think though all teenage boys should be kept locked away until they reach twenty three as they're all hormones and stupidity until that age (or at least I was)...

is there? heres me thinking there was speed restrictions set for a reason uhm.gif

in my eyes no speeding is safe, you never know when you need to break hard & if your speeding lifes are at risk, whether it be your own, passengers or other motorists/pedestrians

^ yeah that.

IMHO, the police need to be tougher, not softer, on speeding & dangerous driving. Especially with younger drivers who have only recently passed their tests. People don't speed to break the law, they speed because they think they'll get away with it (a bit like software piracy, on a completely different note -- another of my pet gripes).

It may sound a bit fascist, but I think we need to clamp down heavily on this. There will always be people who whinge "I got a fine for doing a petty 5mph over the limit", but if we seriously want to stop people speeding, we should make the fines a serious deterrent (maybe make them bigger in proportion to how much you break the limit) and have more cameras / un-marked police cars.

I'm not going to be self-righteous and say I've never sped or broken the law, but if I had been done for it, I would take it on the cheek and accept responsibility for my own actions.

People will always whine, because basically people are self-interested and think they're above the law, but if you don't break the law then there's no problem, right?

I pretty much agree with you Andy,

but wonder what you think about the law on drugs?

It is something that really concerns me (one of my best friends is a barrister so I'm well aware of the consequences) to see so many people criminalising themselves...

the last thing I want or need (or deserve?) is a prison sentence...
