Liquideyes was the living lick...

He was very good- extremely tight mixing, good tough house (turned the volume up the moment he got on) with some twisted beats.

Was rocking it behind the decks too...

Shame so other fucker came on after thirty minutes.

Nice one Andy.

I left around 11.30 (lightweight) so don't know how the rest of the night turned out...

Good to meet Teabag too

(even if she did have to ask EVERYONE in the place whether they were Andy or not...)

It was a quality night. Cheers for coming along Russ, and for your comments. I really enjoyed my set, even if it only felt like about 20 minutes!

I didn't do too badly, even though I was bricking myself for the first 2 minutes desperately trying to work out how to use the mixer! ("Uh, where the fuck are the cue controls...?") smile.gif

The "night proper" was really good. All the DJs were excellent. It was all very funky but it got pretty hard & dirty by the time Mistress Barbara came on. She scored a few bonus points in my book by playing one of my fave tracks: Paco Osuna "Bulling" (Markantonio remix).

Trevor "MacDonald" Rockcliffe was also wicked - a nice progression from really funky stuff to some surprisingly banging shit (man). Very reminiscent of some of Eddie Halliwell's sets actually.

i've heard a couple of essential mixes by misstress barbara as well as her once (albeit very briefly before carl cox came on) and she sounded right up my street techno wise.

shame i missed her.

when will you know if you get though to the next stage?

Yep, you would definitely have liked it. She was pretty damn hard without getting too boring. Even the most vicious stuff had a strong funky groove to it. Right up my street!

I've no idea whether I stand a chance of being asked back ... anyway I'll definitely try to blag another slot next time they have a competition.

To be honest it wasn't particularly competitive - it was quite an informal affair really. Trev was nowhere to be seen (I thought he was supposed to be judging). Some other guy (presumably a promotor bloke) was taking notes; he gave me some positive feedback afterwards.

No as in "driving, racy, funky but tough techno". There was barely a sniff of hard house influence - it was "proper" techno & techy house all the way.

The line-up was:

Christian Smith (cool underground techno, though shady beatmatching)

Trevor "Nelson" Rockcliffe (funky through hard)

Misstress Barbara (hard & dirty all the way)

what did he say?

Well he commented favourably on my tune selection, but he was enthusing about one of the tunes in particular (whose title I can't remember).

I'm quite pleased cos out of four random people who spoke to me afterwards, three of them had a different "favourite tune" from my set. Mission accomplished! Much more satisfying than playing an "anthemy" set and everyone liking the same "obvious" tunes. Plus a random bird said my mixing was really good (TBH I would only have given my mixing 6/10).

Oh yeah, there were no EQ controls on each channel of the mixer, which is a right fucker for mixing techno!

I was mildly disappointed that there was no CDJ (the promoter told me there would be one) since I brought one of my own tracks on CDR.

All in all though, can't complain. Did an okay set. Got some good feedback. Roll on the next opportunity!

No EQ's!?? What mixer was it?

Haven't got the faintest mate. It was one of those quite "short and wide" style ones, probably a 19" rackmount job. I seem to recall there were at least 4 channels (obviously only 2 in use, in this case); I think the crossfader was assignable. There was a single horizontal row of EQ controls at the top right, possibly for the mic or something. The "headphone cue select" buttons for each channel were directly under the gain/trim controls at the top, for some reason it took me ages to find them!

There were very few controls on each individual channel, just the gain + a fader + possibly a crossfader assign switch I think.

Dunno if that narrows it down!!! smile.gif
