bad manners

Maybe I'm a little old-fashioned, but sometimes it gets to me when people fail to show basic manners ... not least of which when I'm a paying customer. Generally it takes nil effort to be polite and courteous so I think there's no excuse for making somebody else's day that bit shitter just because you think you're above being good-mannered.

A few recent examples:

Shopkeepers who fail to acknowledge your presence - e.g. some cow today who didn't even look at me, and scanned all my items while continuing her conversation with the mate. All she had to say was "hi there" and make eye contact but no, her conversation was obviously more important. (Maybe she wanted to show off her feminine "multi-tasking" skills...)

Shopkeepers who take ages to do something (e.g. finding the item you want, or fixing the till or whatever) but don't bother to keep you informed, and/or don't say sorry for the delay. Some people seem to think that if something isn't their "fault" personally, they don't have to apologise.

A little while ago some cheeky builder bloke, who was replacing a window in our flat, sparked up his fag without asking me. I said to him, "excuse me, even my own girlfriend isn't allowed to smoke in our flat".

Customer service people who haven't heard of the word "sorry" - often they have the nerve to cite company policy and/or point out at great lengths that, technically, they've done nothing wrong, despite the fact that a customer has blatantly been messed around (e.g. delayed mail-orders).

Ticket desk people at train/tube stations who are blunt and patronising, and seem to resent you asking them for information.

Likewise, people who are rude to customer service people. All too often people can't see that it isn't that person's fault personally, and waste their energy being aggressive towards the customer service person, when they'd be better off taking up the matter with somebody more senior with some responsibility.

Why are people so rude when it takes virtually no effort to be polite? Any other examples?

I hate being bothered when I'm shopping. Let me get on with what I want to do (even if I look clueless). That said I always act curtious (unless in foul mood) when someone siddles up to me and asks "can I help?" (like I'm stealing stuff or something!), I come over all British in moments like this.

D'you think Britain is worse than other countries for bad manners?

I can't comment on this personally, but America are reputedly better on the customer service front.

Rascal- read some of yesterday's mr happy messages for explanations of why he is pissed off...

didn't help that his ex stayed in his bed and there wasn't so much as a sniff of how's your father...

Go to Tescos- they always say hello when you reach the front of the queue- and they deliver for £4

I'm too used to being ignored in shops, but recently it's getting a little too "American" for my liking.

I like to be treated with indifference or ignored when I'm shopping, when and if I need help I'll ask. The American approach is a little too over the top for me.

That said, I've been to America and was pretty much ignored as I browsed around stores, until they found out I was British that is...

Yeah a lot of people are polite enough if you make the first move. I always make a point of saying hello even if they don't.

As for the aforementioned scenario where the bint carried on her conversation with her mate and ignored me - that is incredibly annoying since I couldn't actually say hello to her without interrupting.
