Unfortunatly, what happened back then isnt (to my knowledge) taught in schools, it certainly wasnt when i was at school.  The first time i really learnt anything about it was when i first watched Saving Private Ryan when it first came out about 10 years ago, and then did a bit of research on the whole thing.

^ Yeah that.

It's only in the last couple of years I've taken an active interest in WW2 and read up on it. When you look at the scale of the what happened, I find it shocking that I wasn't taught about it at school. I don't understand why it wasn't on the curriculum. D'you reckon it's because of political correctness - e.g. so that we don't grow up thinking all Germans are Nazis or something...?

At the risk of seeming insensitive about recent events, WW2 kinda makes the Iraq conflict look like a joke...

Some of the anti-war lobby (who, in the main, I'm pretty convinced would be anti-war under any circumstances) definitely need to take a history lesson, and think about what would have happened in WW2 if we'd all sat on our arses. "Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction..."

Yeh, andy, you kinda summed up what, i was trying to say. I appreciate, unless it is taught etc, people will not be aware, but, we do know wars happened & happen, it is our history.

As you say, the 2nd world war does make todays conflicts look like a walk in the park & I feel that this is what needs to be realised.

Todays conflicts still have men being killed, wounded or maimed. No conflict, large or small is a "walk in the park" for those that have to fight.

Oh god yeh, definately Alex, war is war, regardless, harsh & brutal, but lets be honest, the first & second world wars, men really did suffer, thats not that im saying they do not now, of course they do, but look at how some were treated afterr also, treated rotten & locked up for being mental etc, when thay clearly were shell shocked, war in my opinion is awful & anyone who fights for any country, is a hero in my eyes, cos it is basically putting your life on the line & possible death.

Agreed. Though at least, today's soldiers volunteered to fight, unlike many of our grandparents.

I'd have been quite interested to see what would have happened had the Germans won the war.

Most of the world would be Jewless and speaking German. Tiny moustaches, leather shorts and the occult would become acceptable.

Those men didn't go out, fight and watch their buddies die face down in the sand for the youth of today to stride around in leather shorts!!

Well i'm probably one of few that knew a lot about this before it was ever made into some blockbuster, i.e. saving private ryan. Even though most people know of Omaha beach they forget about Juno, Sword, Gold and Utah. Then there was the Rangers that climbed up the cliff face (can't remember the name of it, but it's just off Utah Beach). If only the allied bombing of the bitches had gone to plan then maybe the death toll the US had inflicted wouldn't of been so high.

But then so many people forget all the other conflicts that happened prior to D-Day in WW2, where the loses were just as high. The campaign in Italy where over 114,000 US troops were either KIA, WIA, or MIA. Then there's the Pacific Theatre where again lots of people died.

I guess what i'm saying, don't just focus on D-Day itself, as there were a lot of other areas on the world where fighting errurpted. I mean after D-Day we had the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes. Another case where fighting was thick.
