CTW Members Trudes Posted May 25, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted May 25, 2003 WORST VIRUS EVER ---CNN ANNOUNCED PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST !! A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet ! been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Card for You". As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN. This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with subject: "A Virtual Card for You." As soon as you get the mail, delete it!! Even if you know the sender!!! Please pass this mail to all of your friends. CTW Members Bukey Posted May 26, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted May 26, 2003 Without meaning to be offensive, but what a load of bollox. If this virus existed, then the warning would: - Contain the virus name. - Not ask you to send it to everyone. This increases network traffic... More mails sent = slower mailservers. Okay, shouldn't have too much of an effect, but if *everyone* sent it to *everyone* then we'd get a mail halt. - McAfee as such wouldn't report anything. McAfee is the name of a product from Network Associates, Inc (or NAI). Either NAI would, or more specifically their AVERT (Anti Virus Emergency Response Team) Labs would. Go look at http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/alert.htm for an up-to-date look at the situation. If there had been an outbreak then it would be listed there, especially if there was currently no updates capable of cleaning it out. For further confirmation, check http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html#threat_list - the Symantec version of AVERT Labs Current Alerts. When receiving any kind of warning, please, please, please check out http://vil.nai.com instead of just posting/mailing to everyone. It means less of your time is wasted, and less of everyone elses too.
