Anyone who "falls out" over a debate on a bloody internet forum, isn't worth the time of day anyway!

 

What is sad is when people get emotionally attached to what they're discussing...

 

I don't really mind if I offend a couple of people. At least I'm sticking up for my own views! (and/or having a laugh!)

your right peeps shouldnt fall out over different opions & thats all it is, opinions & we are entitled to them whether we agree or not, right or wrong!! but obviously if your right & know for def you are then argue away innit!!!

it's great that you are thinking about your position.

 

it's sad in a way that the thread bored you. it's about how people treat other people which is the biggest source of pain and misery on the planet. that people find it boring to discuss is, in a way, part of the problem.

What I meant was that the discussion was getting a bit too deep and (probably) too intellectual for me!

i find myself agreeing with fred again. a person can often feel like they are being "given [censored]" when they are actually being invited to back up their argument or explain their position more clearly.

 

i'm not suggesting this is true in your case (it might be) but if somebody feels defending their own beliefs is a "hassle" i'm inclined to say it's because they don't really believe what they are saying or they don't know.

 

belief is a powerful thing - people are, sadly, killed for a difference in belief. belief is a big part of who you are - perhaps it is who you are.

 

and get told that theyre not even your views in some cases!

 

this is interesting. why do you feel you're being told your views are not your views?

BOLLOX! in other words his way of thinking is thought out where as the rest of us have been brain washed, im a media student and so much of my course has been about media influence at the end of the day i see and understand what theyre tryin to do but that doesnt mean i dont have those same views does it?

i confess that i think a lot. i like to talk about thoughts and feelings and ideas and the world in which i live. i like to engage in dialogue and challenge thinking and be challenged on my thinking. at the risk of sounding really pretentious, i think you misunderstand the meaning of the word prententious...

 

i don't think it's putting somebody down to suggest their opinion hasn't been fully thought through or to challenge somebody to back up their opinion with some more discussion or some sources for their "facts". if somebody feels that's being "put down" it suggests to me they know that wht they are saying doesn't really bear scrutiny... i could be wrong.

 

a couple of people in this thread made claims which they were repeatedly unable or unwilling to back up with facts and/or sources. that says so much.

 

i also don't think i'm a sod but, like everybody, you are entitled to your opinion.

i don't want this to sound inflammatory but you obviously don't understand the concept of free speech either. there's no free speech online. if you want free speech, go stand on the corner and tell the world your opinions.

 

james/CTW is under absolutely no obligation to give you a channel for that opinion online.

 

earlier in the thread i asked you a couple of questions which you didn't yet answer. would you? here they are to save you having to trawl the thread looking for them:

 

"you apologised for what you said twice in your post - does that suggest you're not sure you believe what you are saying or you feel, somehow, bad for feeling the way you do? if so, why?"

 

"i agree with you that there is a threat from muslim extremists and that this is part of real life. do you think sending "them all" back is the solution?"

 

"it's part of real life that people get murdered. should we just lock everybody in the UK in prison now to prevent that happening too?"

Not at all, I'm saying that a lot of people are too lazy to put and time and effort in and actually think about these issues for themselves, instead regurgitating opinions fed to them by the media. I'm quite happy to listen to people if they can back up their opinions with coherent arguments.

Take Captain Jack for example, when he first posted I disagreed with him, and said so. He then put forward his thinking, and while I still don't argree with him, at least he has shown that he's thought about the issue and drawn his own conclusions.

i also wrote, elsewhere in the thread: "seem to be simply parroting xenophobic rubbish which is spoon-fed to them by crap tabloids rather than thinking for themselves."

 

note i chose the words "seem to be" rather than "are" as a way of comparing rather than specifying. i know it seems a subtle difference but it's an important one.

 

i'm not suggesting this is true in your case but certain posters were asked to back up viewpoints or claims with facts or sources and were unable to or unwilling to. to me that suggests that those views are not really their own which they have thought through and truly believe - they've just been copied from another source.

 

anyway, i could be wrong and if you feel i personally made you feel like you had no opinion of your own then you have my apology.
