paranoia induced by drugs

i can understand the science behind why some drugs can lead to paranoia, but i've always wondered why canabis does.

 

some people it seems to mellow them out where as others it has the opposite effect.

 

anyone know the science behind this?

I'm gonna take a guess and suggest that it varies from person to person because each persons brain chemistry is different. Another example is drinking, with some people when alcohol reaches the brain it reacts with the chemicals and makes them happy, others it makes people wanna have a fight...

 

I'm sure others will be able to come up with a better answer than me tho

I thought most of the links were anecdotal. Rather than being a cause of psychosis, it can trigger psychosis in people that have a predisposition to it.

 

Any link is thought to come from the dopamine system but I'm not sure if that's been proven or not.

 

A lot of people that smoke cannabis also take other drugs so it's hard to actually isolate the cause.

thats deffinatly the case with alcohol. it does shut down the higher brain functions et al basically reverting you back to a primate.

I'm not an expert on this, but cannabis does have mild-to-moderate hallucinatory properties. I guess anything that is hallucinogenic can make you paranoid or disorientated...?

yeah i cant handle it. i either get real para or being in a room full off ppl and i cant stop laughing, which is well embarrasing

I used to get Para on pills when i was younger (about 5 or 6 years ago), but i dont seem to anymore... whether thats anything to do with the fact that they seem to be a lot weaker than they used to be is anybodys guess

Which is because of the drugs effects on the dopamine system. Drugs like cannabis, amphetamines, cocaine affect the dopamine system and can cause psychosis. Drugs like heroin don't.

but the long term affects are probably gonna be the same, I would imagine

All the above drugs including heroin cause release of dopamine in the brain. I think the differing effects observed with each one depend upon the part of the brain in which dopamine is released. Maybe cannabinoids release dopamine into parts of the brain such as the prefrontal cortex, overactivity of which is known to cause psychosis. Both have similar effects on the dopaminergic reward centres, however, or they would not be addictive.

that is exactly what it did to me....
