The whole news story fucks me off...

 

1. A massive proportion of smokers WANT to give up. So the implication that most people smoke for "pleasure" is slightly misleading.

2. I still think the guy IS being patronising by generalising about people on council estates. He's probably right, but he's a minister and I'm not, and he's not allowed to make generalisations like that.

3. The story does highlight a greater issue: why shouldn't people be denied the right to enjoy themselves? The problem with smoking is that it is detrimental to other people AS WELL as the smoker.

4. Using his logic, that certain members of society should not be denied their only supposed pleasure, perhaps we should legalise heroin as well...? After all, that's one of the few remaining pleasures certain people have...

5. I hate the way "middle class" people (or whoever) are being painted as interfering, or "obsessed", or somehow snobbish, just because they dislike breathing other people's smoke. I am not against banning smoking in pubs for example, but it's not because I want to deny other people their pleasure - it's just because I don't want to breathe their fucking smoke (or get it in my eyes ... or acquire fag burns in my favourite shirts ... or have to wash my clothes when I get home because they stink of smoke... etc.)

6. People are too quick to bandy around the term "rights". I accept that perhaps it is your right to enjoy yourself however you please, as long as it doesn't affect others. However, it is NOT your absolute right to smoke wherever/whenever you please, since it is OTHER people who have to breathe your fumes.

7. If we want to talk about "obsession", or interference ... why should people be denied the right to take certain illegal drugs, which (unlike smoking) DON'T affect the people around them...?

Agreed, but whether or not they enjoy smoking is irrelevant to the "should we or should we not ban smoking" debate. I refer you to my comment about heroin.
