after seeing James Holden on saturday, he confirmed in my mind that there still is such a thing as "good" trance out there -- you don't need to resort to going to see DJs play mid/late-90s classics sets to hear some really good tunes.

just downloaded the Way Out West self-titled and "Intensify" albums, have to say they're pretty amazing. and my mate only just told me that Nick Warren (who I'm seeing this Saturday) is half of Way Out West. DUHHHH. rolleyes.gif highly recommended anyway if anyone wants to check them out.

i dont think most ppl do - i just think alot of us non trance fans are scared to go to trance nights incase a dj plays crap trance (and there is just as much crap trance out there as there is crap hardhouse, crap techno, etc)

its like when i goto hardhouse nights i know what DJs to avoid, but i dont with trance as i've not heard enuf of it - catch 22 if u like

I still like some trance. I don't think it's all cheesy by any means - I have a big collection of quality trance from around 98-99. I don't doubt that there is some quality stuff still coming out, but either the signal-to-noise ratio is worse or I've just gone off the genre a bit.

This is controversial, but I didn't even think that the much-hyped Paul Van Dyk was much cop (in terms of variety or music played) having seen him DJ several times now. Some of his productions are pretty good, e.g. "For an Angel" is still excellent, much better than that silly new tune.

I love some stuff by Push/MIKE, it's got a lovely deep but driving sound, and doesn't resort to patronising major chords and fluffy vocals. Also love some of the harder/tougher trance - I don't mean "hard trance" which just sounds like sped up trance with a hard house bassline, but stuff like System F "Needle Juice" and Innergy "Welcome Asteroid". thumbs.gif

there will always be trends and, inevitably, backlashes.

any debate about what constitutes "proper" this or "real" that is, in my opinion, worthless because we're discussing art and beauty is in the eye (or in this case ear) of the beholder.

it does surprise me, given all the talk here about "hard" music and "banging" tunes, that more people here don't listen to psytrance - most of which makes the hardest of "hard trance" i've heard sound, well, positively soft.

to each their own.

namaste.

talking of nick warren, the new global underground (0024) is relatively downtempo but, in my opinion, stunning. check it out.

it has a boards of canada track halfway through disk 1 for [censored]'s sake!

If people want a good night with some excellent trance, come down The Cross. The music seems to be getting better and better at the moment... This month sees JFK, Neville, Simon Patterson and Vickie Vibe. Much is expected...

Psytrance is a bit of a mixed bag in my experience. I have heard some incredible stuff, but I have also heard some very dull stuff. I have been to nights where I swear they had exactly the same 16th-note bassline (BUM-dadada-BUM-dadada-BUM-dadada-BUM-dadada) for about 4 hours...

I like the more progressive end of psy; the full-on stuff just sounds like very minimal hard house/trance with novelty sound effects a lot of the time!

I guess it's the same problem as hard house - there is some quality music out there, but there are a lot of DJs who will play any old pap. Oh and the psy crowd is usually pretty messy in my experience ... I'm spotting a correlation here... smile.gif

that's the problem i have with GU, a lot of the ones that i've heard aren't really banging enough, which is a shame, especially people like Diggers, etc, i find them a bit too chilled, almost. will give it a quick listen, though. seeing him this saturday, can't wait biggrin.gif

alasdair, when you mean psytrance, you mean groups like Hallucinogen, right?
