There are way too many youngsters (read 21 and below) nowadays who think they know everything about music... It's over the next 10 years of their life they will learn, but only if they are open to learning something else (which most aren't IMO)

Me putting a rolleyes.gif didn't mean i had anything to say constructive against your opinion mate. It just meant i didn't agree, hence why he was rolling his eyes.

So even though I have been into dance music since the old rave scene, the fact im only 19 now means I still have no idea about the scene even though I have followed it for (pretty much) as long as it has been in existence??

Coming soon...

4th March 2006, VALVE SOUNDSYSTEM @ Sheffield Uni with Pendulum, Roni Size, Dillinja, Sub Focus and more!!!

Not saying that people under 21 know nothing about music at all, all I was saying that generally people of that age think they know 'everything', I agree some people are very knowledgeable in the music business but there are some gobshites on here that want everyone to know how well 'clued up' they are.

Oh and Chris, not a dig at you, but you mean you were listening to dance(generalisation, but there you go) music and knowing what it was since you were 6(Or younger!!)??? confused.gif

I know I didn't have too much of a clue until I was 10 or so... Even though I was hearing the latest music all the time(Step-Dad owned a disco)...

There is no shame in not being able to DJ, there is no shame in not knowing too much about certain music genres, as long as you enjoy what you listen to thats all that matters. Its not a compettition as in to whos the best or who knows what, the thing thats killing the enjoyment of music for me is this precise point, too many people will shout you down with their so-called knowledge.

I think this is the crux of the matter. The more your tastes evolve, and the greater the range of music you listen to, the more you start to see right through derivative crap, and the more you yearn for more original, challenging music.

There are loads of records that I enthused about several years ago, but now they seem completely one-dimensional and boring. Who can honestly say that they have never "grown out of" a certain sort of music? Of course it doesn't make that style of music bad, after all you liked it once! But it truly takes time and active exploration of music (i.e. not just going to the same clubs all the time, and not just buying records from exactly the same labels all the time) to gain an appreciation for many styles of music.

As Creamy says, the problem is the number of 18-year-olds (to generalise!!) who think their opinion of music is more important than someone else's just because they

* have decks [and 50 Tidy Trax records/variants]

* have just got into producing [i.e. recycling other people's tunes on a pirated copy of eJay/Acid]

* go clubbing every weekend [listening to exactly the same music!]

* have recently got into the "underground" scene / non-pop music [and now take the view that all "commercial" music is shite!]
