I used to be a recruitment consultant unitl recently....

All due respect to Nic, and I'm glad you are not one now, The view from inside an agency, and the view from a potential employer are somewhat different.

Agents are much more likely to be able to place you if they actually have a vacency to fill. And are retained by the orgainisation concerened to fill it. On an exclusive basis.

Recuiters spend more time trying to find vacencies than bodies to fill them, as the market for the last decade in most sectors has favoured them, and the employer, not the potential employee. Many of them resort to finding ads in papers and re-advertsisng. Tho they all spout on about how they have the best candidates ect ect.

Many employers won't touch permament recruitment agencies with a barge pole. Many rely on graduate schemes, trade journals, profesional associations their own hr function ect ect.

The barriers to entry in recruitment are very low, any woman and her dog can set themselves up as a recruitment agent. Therfore if you spend all your time talking to as many agents as possible, instead of finding the ones that actually have the vacencies u will be wasting effort. You will be asked to attend too many meetings, and be submiting cv's right, left and centre.

Obviously the key then is to find which agencies in your sector have placed people lately, have the vacancies, and concentrate on them. And spend the rest of your time on the other avenues.

The advice about SAYING that you are exclusive with the ones you go with is a good.

were you putting that for a laugh or were you really being short sighted there?

Phil i'm looking through the agencies as well as i'm moving to sheffield to move in with nic. I'm going for loads. The more feelers you put out there the better the chance of finding a job eh!

If you're putting all your eggs in one basket you're gonna limit yourself totally. As i'm going for IT jobs i'm checking out IT job magazines, agencies, and online job agencies. it's a specialised field so you may be lucky depending on the area that you're living in to find one or two jobs a week if you're lucky in the paper. Agencies is a better way to go in my books.

Mr H - you can, but (apart from having to keep track of them all) you want to make sure that lots of diff agencies don't sign u up for the same job...cos that company might get pissed off with having your details coming in from 10 different places. agencies usually tell u about everything they put u forward to..just wondered if any hardcore professionals out there had any advice. smile.gif

Go for as many as possible, it helps you find the right job... Just make sure you keep track of where they are sending your CV...

Also it's a good idea to ask a recruitment agent about your CV to see if you can improve it and have a better chance of getting a job...

I've just been into the job center for the first time ever, and all they were interested in was what benefit I wanted to claim.

After explaining I didn't want to claim any benefit, I actuallly wanted a job, they just left me to a touch button screen job searcher wtf.gif

Think i'll try again later rolleyes.gif

Just be yourself... That is unless all you ever do is swear every other word, then you may want to tone it down a bit... wink.gif
