this is ridiculous, nobody's actually managed to bring any convincing evidence to disprove my original statement.

best form of defence is attack, is it?

face facts, london smells [censored] rank, it's full of far too many ignorant people whose experience of culture doesn't stretch beyond Lambrini, and the "friendly London charm" now seems to take the form of a sawn-off shotgun.

I want to apologise if anyone takes this the wrong way, but this is a sore point for me. If it was done tongue in cheek, then tough [censored], I'm up for a ruck today. I've lived here for 6 years and I f*cking love the place, for the same reasons that everyone loves where they do, and that people that don't live down here wouldn't understand. So......

First things first:

I spend far too much time arguing the cause for London with people that have been to it once or twice, and half the time they've been nut.gif anyway.

Tom - each to their own mate...... but for London I think there are a few more decent things than the plague and cockneys:

1. Swinging 60s - fashion and clubbing and celebrity made London one of the fashion capitals of the world. Top designers are still bred in London and it's still one of the centres of excellence for this.

2. Art and culture - the west end - theatre began (with Stratford) with Shakespeare and Marlowe plays at the GLobe and these days, alongside Broadway (and preceding it) we have one of the finest theatre cultures in the world.

3. Cinema - Pinewood, Elstree, Ealing - home of british comedy in the 20s til the 70s, and home of Bond, Kubrick and many more (including Star Wars, both past and present). London was and IS still the centre of the UK fillm industry.

4. Sport - we have more premiership teams than any other city, we're bidding for the Olympics (having hosted it once already - something Manc, Leeds or Liverpool has never done.... oh and well done for Edinburgh's 1986 commonwealth games.... sleepy.gif ) We have the natinoal staduim for Rugby and Football, and 2 of the best cricket grounds in the land.

5. Food - london's the gastronomic capital of the UK, with more restaurants with michelin stars than anywhere else in Britain.

6. Nightlife - the best in the country by far (tho Newcastle and Manc are close). If you don't believe me then you've not lived here.... and if you've not lived here then you haven't had the chance to actually realise what London has to offer. Every genre of dance, jazz, opera, classical, disco, you name it, it's here. Not to mention the Jazz cafe and scene, and the city where both the Comedy Store and Jongleurs were born.

Is that ok for you then?? flipa.gif

As for this:

yeh well heres a couple of facts for u:

londoners are very ignorant to north england..

Bunch of arse. I've lived in Sheffield and the chip on northerners shoulders about "rich twats, cockneys and toffs" "down south" is way worse than our view of northerners. It's wank like this that just widens the gap.

londoners are very ignorant full stop.

You're right. Yeah, we're thick as pighshit. And this is based on what exactly....?? School league tables? Uni results.... do tell, I'm all ears.

southerners are softer without a doubt...no cold acid rain to toughen them up

Yeah but we're closer to France.

londoners have a lower life expectancy

Rick... I'm with you. I don't wanna be a drolling 100 year old wreck. You're welcome to it.

londoners are either working class scum..(sum are alwight)..or posh tosh (non of them are alwight)

So who am I then? Which one?? Go on, guess, I HAVE to know. I live next door to the queen but my other neighbour's Dean Gaffney..... I'm confuuuused.

london is a great cultured place...that cudnt give a [censored] bout anythink else

Well what do you expect with this sort of attitude. It's an egocentric place, just like many capital cities..... live with it.

Right.

Rant over.

Don't say you didn't ask for it..... eviltongue.gif

I knew nothing about London until I came to live here. There are heaps of annoyances (public transport, annoying tourists, the usual gripes!) but coming down south is still the best move I ever made!

Having lived "up north" most of my life (around Preston / Blackpool) and travelled around the country a fair bit, I would say that most of the preconceptions that northerners have about "down south" are utter bollocks.

On the other hand, a lot of the preconceptions that Londoners have about "northern scum" are quite true - for example there are a disproportionate number of small-minded bigots up there! And then there's the relative "roughness" - in general I'd say London is a hell of a lot less rough (in terms of crime, personal safety) than most cities I've been in the country.

In defence of the London-bashers: yes people do come across as a bit more rude and impersonal down here. But this is self-perpetuating - everyone acts that way because everyone else does, if you see what I mean! Same with, say, traffic congestion - I regret to say that my driving style became more aggressive when I moved here. Because everyone else is pushy and selfish, you have to be too, otherwise you just won't get anywhere. Also, London superficially comes across as dirty and rough because of, for example, the amount of begging, but I don't think it's any worse than many other big cities I can think of.

But these are minor gripes compared with the breadth of culture, amazing range of pubs & restaurants, the diversity of people I have met, and (most of all) the music scene!
