CTW Members TomD Posted June 22, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 22, 2003 looking through folks' offers of hard house cds and online mixes to download, i keep seeing the same tracks time and time again -- "Beyond Motion", "Floorburn", "Beautiful", "Hostile", anything by TDV, Signum, those Sharkboy bootlegs... does nobody actually get bored of hearing the same hh tunes on mixes time and time again, even though they're months (or possibly years) old? or am i completely alone in thinking that when a dj does a mix cd it should be at least just a little bit inventive and original? looking from tracklistings, many of the hard house djs (note: not all) on this board who've offered mixes just seem to rely on the same old tunes as crowd-pleasers, or just play the same as everyone else. there was me thinking that dance music had some ounce of individuality about it, but i imagine seeing sets by some of the djs on here would be like going to a school disco. this isn't a total slating of hard house or anyone's technical ability, i just don't understand why hard djs can't be a bit more creative and seek out new tunes, or is it that there literally aren't enough new hard tunes being made? this problem doesn't seem to exist in the house, techno, prog, drum&bass, breaks scenes... so why just hard? CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted June 22, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 22, 2003 Indeed! I know a hard house / techno promoter who says he bins 90% of the demos he receives because they usually consist entirely of the same [censored] Nukleuz and Tidy tracks. I'm not completely slating these labels, but so many of their tracks are just variations on a theme! I don't mind hearing the occasional "classic" or "anthem" on a night out, but primarily I expect to hear new tunes. Plus I can't believe how many people are content to listen to exactly the same style of music all night. Diversity rules!
CTW Members Blink Posted June 22, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 22, 2003 It is the same when you go into places like the member's bar at Sundiss, the "upcoming" DJ's play the crowd pleasers. I can understand it, firstly, when you are trying to get your name out there, you don't want to play a set that is too "esoteric", and alienate everybody. The next day you want everyone to say "Banging set", not "wow that set was different", so you go with songs you know work. Also, (and I am assuming here) is it not the case that the majority of new tunes by "established" artists are sent out on demo months before they come out in retail, so it is harder for upcoming DJ's to get hold of them. Not that they shouldn't be busting their ass, and spinning every bit of vinyl they can lay their hands on to find something different tho. The art is to make your sound unique, whilst retaining the basics.

CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted June 22, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 22, 2003 There's nothing wrong with "playing to a crowd", but for me the joy of DJing or giving people my mix CDs, is to get people into good new music. Good DJs are not just entertainers, they should be educators too. Most clubbers don't have extensive collections of obscure tunes, so it is a joy to share my favourite tracks with other people. If I give someone a CD, even if there's just one tune on there that they like (but hadn't heard before) that still makes me a very happy chappy! I've never received an advance promo in my life, but I'll bet nobody has heard of 70% of the tunes in my collection!

Blink said: is it not the case that the majority of new tunes by "established" artists are sent out on demo months before they come out in retail, so it is harder for upcoming DJ's to get hold of them. yes, that's a fair point, but you don't need to play tunes by established artists to get a good reaction, that should just come from good tunes full stop, regardless of who they're by. Blink said: Not that they shouldn't be busting their ass, and spinning every bit of vinyl they can lay their hands on to find something different tho. exaaaaaaaaaaaactly. the hardest part of DJing is finding the tunes, which a lot of people seem to skimp on. i only dj as a hobby really at the moment, but if i was trying to get gigs somewhere, i'd at least want to show that i had my own unique sound rather than just the hit parade of hard house. leedslad> no, i'm not talking about just your mix, or in fact just the mixes from djs off here -- i'm talking about upcoming hh djs in general and tracklistings for mixes i've seen everywhere. Do you listen to anything apart from hard house / hard trance? I'm just trying to work out how you can possibly think all new stuff is rubbish! CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted June 22, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 22, 2003 Yes leedzlad22, the quote button is there so that you can make it clear which post, or which specific comment, you are replying to. However it's pretty obvious which comment you are replying to if it's the last one before your reply! What is the point of quoting the whole message, including sub-quotes? It's just a waste of bandwidth, and clogs up the thread. (Yes I am aware of the irony of this post!)
