Id depends on if you'd rather be popular as a result of your dishonesty,or unpopular as a result of your honesty.

White lies are ok,big elephant testicle sized lies are'nt.

had some ulterior motive in wanting to know me.

Don't worry mate, I have no interest in wanting to know you . eviltongue.gif

Seriously tho, you sound very cynical. Do you really want to go through the rest of your life thinking like that ? I reached a point where I'd been [censored] over quite badly, but I made the decision not to mistrust everyone I met. What a horrible way to go through life.

Yeah I am Freddie. Sad, I know - but at the end of the day, my dad today lied blatently to my face - and he knew I knew. I tried to be different and take that 'not mistrust' frame of mind a few weeks ago when I got home, but within a week, someone took advantage of my guard being down.

And whats the point in trusting, when the people so close to you (friends, family) lie to you?

I totally am for namiung and shaming lying fuckers.

But then what happens?

You get these people that know [censored] all about certain others who feel its neccessary to butt in and give their opinion when in fact - they know BUGGER ALL.

in my opinion, a lie is a lie no matter what colour or size it is.

this is a really interesting exercise (to everybody, not just you, fd). next time you tell a lie, try to find 5 minutes to think properly about why you told the lie. analyse what exactly it is that made you think telling the lie was better than telling the truth.

you may find you have to unravel a couple of lies - because lies tend to be built on lies. if you are a frequent liar, you have to lie to cover up your lies.

often, when you unravel a lie and get back to the original reason you lied, it's laughable some of the things we all lie about because we're scared (for whatever reason) to tell the truth about certain things.

amen.

if you think about living more in the moment than the past or the future (which is hard i know but worth working on in my opinion), mistrust becomes a lot less relevant.

nice one, fred.

I see what your saying big Alasdair.

But I still think under certain circumstances its more beneficial to tell the odd porky, than to be totally honest.

Like when say,LML introduces creamy as her new boyfriend to all her mates.Im sure they'd all agree that,'yes he is lovely, where did you find such a delectable hunk?' instead of 'who the hell's this chubby guy with the personal hygiene problem?'.

Sometimes its just better to more economical with the truth.

no one has ever convinced me this is the case.

and before anybody jumps, don't get me wrong: i lie. i understand, more often than not, why i lie. i'd like to do it a lot less. not at all is the goal.

I can see that sometimes its beneficial to deliberately not disclose something - e.g., someome is in a bit of trouble but you are 90% certain the issue is going to be resolved before the person needs to know, so why tell them / potentially upset them.

This is different to blatent lying though.

In all circumstances I think if someone puts you on the spot and asks you a straight question its only right to give them a straight answer.

The problem comes when you start agreeing to 'not tell anyone' something when a close friend has specifically asked you to not say something. Again though, although you are lying by saying you dont know anything its not a blatent lie about a fact / rumour - i.e. you are not telling 'porkies' or laying off new lies to others to further go and gossip about. If you say you dont know anything nothing can come back to you - I cant think of a time when someone has called me a liar for not wanting to disclose information.

i appreciate that this is a hypotheical situation but, in this case, you're putting your opinion of whether a person needs to know something before theirs.

for me this just smacks of relationship mind games where one person starts second-guessing the other's response and begins behaving differently and accordingly. it's the swift and rocky road to ruin in my opinion...
