Yes officer this is pure 100% illegal.....

Which my best mate Dave just sold me. I have loads more at home.

No Dear I think the new haircut is dreadful, and you need to lose about 4 stone, and being as we've been together for two years I am actively seeking a new boyfrind.

No officer I was travlleing at 90 per hour becuase I felt like it. Please arrest me.

That's the most ridiculous idea i've ever heard boss, it will never work in a thousand years. I know that will make you feel really angry, but i think being 100% honest is the best policy...Don't worry about my payrise.

No, Dad Lots of people who get lung cancer survive, modern medicine is doing wonders.

Yes Dear I know you've lost both your parent's, and you're still so very young. But I don't belive in a any sort of afterlife. So their not watching over you, and you are all alone in the world.

nope, i would still argue that 90% of those lies listed are actually un-necessary.

Being compassionate though is another thing altogether.

Guy's

Which of the above statements is aeccptable. The only one that is a lie. Most people who get lung cancer die. But I'm not sure saying that to a parent who has been diagnosed would be a good idea.

Up to you though.

yeah we are but if we were brought up in a world where no one did it then i believe the world would be a better, not worse, place. that was the argument here i think (or one of them lol)

So it's acceptable to lie if you are being commpasionate. Which takes me back to the original point. Which is if it is acceptable to lie sometimess how do u legislate, what's acceptable and what isn't. Everyone will have a different view.

The fact is that none of us want's to be lied to. But most of us can't face the whole unvarnished truth in all it's brutallity. And are certainly not prepared to take the consequences of giving it, if we were.

It's all very well saying that violently diasgreeing with your boss is a good idea but in the real world it might well lead to a P45.

Admitting you were speeding 'cos u felt like it' will get you points, and lose you your licence. If you show contrition and come up with a reasonable excuse u could get away with it.

The world would be a great deal more violent, brutal, and difficult to live in, if everyone said what they thought, when they thought it. Without a thought for anyone else feelings...

Imagine the Northern Ireland Peace Process.....Palestine...realtionships...work.

Even if we all did it all the time...it would still be pretty shitty. It would just give licence to all the horrible people in the world to be even more horrible than they already are!!

The truth hurts.

Yes officer this is pure 100% illegal.....

you may find it hard to believe (why are you posting this anonymously?) that many people believe in being honest when it comes to the law. it's part of taking responsibility for one's own actions. maybe you need to look at the cause of this one and not the symptoms?

No Dear I think the new haircut is dreadful, and you need to lose about 4 stone, and being as we've been together for two years I am actively seeking a new boyfrind.

lying to your partner has to be one of the more common minefields for many people. i feel sorry for somebody who, if their partner gets a terrible haircut, feels they can't be honest and tell them it's terrible. that's a pretty unhealthy relationship, don't you think?

also, if you don't know how to tell your partner their haircut is terrible with tact, you need to do some homework.

anybody should be able to see the opportunity to turn a bad haircut day into an opportunity to give a compliment in another way - all of which can be achieved while being completely honest...

and, if you've been together four years and you're looking for somebody else and this is how it comes out - well, you've been lying to yourself for ages and i can not imagine a worse person to lie to...

That's the most ridiculous idea i've ever heard boss, it will never work in a thousand years.

now i'm starting to feel really sorry for you. if you think your boss' idea is stupid - and you truly believe in your conviction - why wouldn't you tell them?

i've managed loads of people and if an employees said to me "that's the most ridiculous idea...and here's why". if they make their case, i'm thoroughly impressed. learning to manage your manager is a valuable life skill.

Yes Dear I know you've lost both your parent's, and you're still so very young. But I don't belive in a any sort of afterlife. So their not watching over you, and you are all alone in the world.

this one is slightly different because there's no real truth about the afterlife - nobody knows. in this case, i would probably tell the child what i believed the parents would want him/her to know.

if the parents didn't believe in an afterlife, so be it. "you are all alone in the world" is obviously an exaggeration to score points cheaply. but, if the kid is all alone in the world, candy-coating that [censored] is not helping.

i think you are (deliberately or otherwise) confusing "being honest" with "being tactless" - two different things.

it's possible to be 100% honest and compassionate at the same time.

The truth hurts.

sometimes, yes. but that's not such a bad thing. life has ups and downs. deal with it.

lying hurts so much more - and for what? it makes life easier in the short term because you are afraid. it just stacks up trouble which you have to deal with later anyway. but then it's worse because, on top of everything, you lied...

Agree with everything you said there Alasdair. You've pretty much summed up everything I thought about Mr Anon's post.
