CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted July 21, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted July 21, 2003 Can someone explain the difference between: 1. hard house 2. hardstyle 3. nu-NRG Someone explained to me that "hard dance" is just a mixture of hard music, be it techno, trance or house. But what do these other two buzz-words mean? Someone bandied this word "hardstyle" around the other week but was subsequently unable to explain what it meant! And what is so "nu" about "nu-NRG?" I can't help but think people are thinking of ever more contrived names for the same old idea!

CTW Members Mr Happy Posted July 21, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted July 21, 2003 there seems to be 2 deffinitions of nu nrg @ the mo 1) nu nrg - sped up hard trance (trance-core is another anme that seems to get grouped with nu nrg). 2) nu nrg - hard house with a more of a knocking kick and a rumbling driving bassline as opposed to a bassy drawn out kick. also tends to be at a slightly higher bpm. artists would be like karim, glazby, casper, testtube babies @ the end of the day its all hard music so i cant c the big deal Quote Mr Happy's fishy fish MangaFish munch munch MSN & e-mail - mangafish@mangafish.net AOL - MangaMorgan Online mixes - http://www.mangafish.net/mixes/
CTW DJs Ian Cashman Posted July 21, 2003 CTW DJs Share Posted July 21, 2003 im prolly gonna get this wrong...hehe but i see hardstyle as hard techno-ey un-melodic trance.. like what dj-scot-project plays..... kinda goose-stepping drums and loadsa filter sweeps fx and big synth noise rather than melody hard house... bouncy shite hard nrg... [censored] knows

Interesting ... sounds like a cross between psytrance and hard techno? This sounds like a good description of what Nuw Idol was played at The Fridge on Saturday. (The darker, less fluffy end of trance with a heavy techno influence.) The myriad of silly names are enough to scare anyone away from dance music! CTW Members Mr Moo Posted July 21, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted July 21, 2003 1. Hardhouse, for an example, anything by Tidy... 2. Nu NRG... This is like stupidly hard, and u so hard u can hardly notice the change of choon if ur not listening for it, or unless u know the song.... Example id say would be U.H.T. Battle Anybody (Casper Remix) 3. Hardstyle.... go on soulseek and search for Lady Dana or Technoboy etc...
CTW Members ReBirth Posted July 21, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted July 21, 2003 Moo's the most correct out of them all there... Nu NRG is certainly not sped up Hard Trance..that's more in the Hardcore region.. Nu NRG/Hard NRG is Casper/Ingo etc...oinky and hard... Hard House is BK/BK/BK/BK.... Hardstyle is a fusion of German Trance/Italian Techno and other more 'European' sounds...Check for stuff on Nukleuz Black..that's all Hard Style...It's easy to spot the difference between them all.. But I'm not really too keen on this whole pigeon-holing thing...

CTW Members Blink Posted July 21, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted July 21, 2003 Would I be right in assuming that Nu-NRG now has 2 meanings? I remember first hearing the term Nu-NRG in about 96-97, and it did refer to music that was more like sped up trance, with bits of techno in, I would just say it was more "beepy" than HH was. CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted July 21, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted July 21, 2003 I don't understand why people feel the need to invent a new name for every single little variation on a genre ... agreed with ReBirth on the pigeon-holing thing! This does happen outside of hard house as well (e.g. drum and bass, jungle, techstep, darkstep, hardstep etc!) but some of these actually sound quite different to me. IMHO it makes more sense to use general adjectives to describe variations on a "main" genre. E.g. uplifting / dark / soulful / deep trancey / techy / funky slow / driving / fast vocal / dubby / instrumental intense / sparse E.g. dark techy hard house or slow dubby techno. That way you don't need a bloody glossary to know what people are on about!! As soon as someone invents a new name for a particular combination of styles, you end up with hundreds of tunes which all sound exactly the same as crappy artists jump on the bandwagon, and loads of DJs who pigeonhole themselves into playing that exact style! Look at what happened to "speed garage" a few years ago... Some of it was good but the genre blew itself out because it became so typecast and narrowly defined!
