For exactly the same reasons (i.e. executions) I would say that the US is more barbaric than the UK. Just because the majority of people are 'normal' does not necessarily mean a country is or isn't barbaric. No-one would argue that the fundamentalist Christian lobby in the US is a majority, however, the fact that is even a significant minority means that it is relevant...

And every time there is a murder in Britain, the tabloids start shouting 'bring back the death penalty'.

 

Take the US for example, the fact that they have the death penalty has done absolutely nothing to lower murder rates. For centuries in Britain we had the death penalty for punishment for loads of crimes, but that didn't stop people commiting them as nothing was done to combat the main reasons people turn to crime, such as poverty. I can't really be arsed to write alot on this, but if anyone is interested in reading about why Capital Punishment does not work as a deterrent, then read the first half of Utopia by Peter More, he explains it alot better than I could.

 

Anyway, the primary aim of terroism is to inflict terror. Beheading people and filming it is meant to scare us shitless and it has worked. In a way, the fact that we are all talking it shows that the terrorists have won.
