A friend keeps getting this message and then her machine shuts down (she only just had enough time to send me this screen shot!!)

Any guesses anyone?

what is ironic about this is that you need to download the hotfix but as long as you're not logged on the problem wont persist. Ironic isn't it.

What is strange is that it's also effecting the Win XP users. Clubbin_Si was also gettin this problem.

OK i've been having the problem and have come in through Safe mode and haven't got any problems yet...

So I will try fix it whilst in safe mode.

Although it wouldn't allow me to switch my firewall back on (the default windows Net one that is!). confused.gif

aye i worked it down to a outside connection. Could be a new virus, trojan or whatever. But whatever it is remotely shutting down the PC's. Like Mr Happy said as soon as a firewall was in place it would eliminate the problem.

Reminds me of the Linux problem with RedHat 6. lol. It could be a particular set of characters that are fired at the PC that causes the shut down, which was what the problem with RedHat 6 was. But that is a wild guess.

So lets think about it logically. When did this problem start to happen? Anyone know of when the first incident within our circle of friends happen? What OS's is it effecting, we know Win XP so far.

We know that if we don't have an outside connection the problem stops. Does the problem persist when an outside connection is made but when a firewall is in place? Are the users being effected on dial up, ADSL or cable?

Alf ya defualt xp firewall is [censored]!!! Turn it off as it does more damage than good. Get the free one by zonealarm.

Quick update: FAO ALL NTL CABLE USERS (and others smile.gif)

[22:08] Multiple PC's across the NTL cable network (and possibly others) are being remotely shutdown by an RPC (Remote procedure call) exploit. A dialog box will pop up instructing the user that the system will shutdown in 60 seconds.

[22:08] be warned!
