I think all Tony was getting at was, that there is a difference in his opinion of bass quality between CD & vinyl, better bass sound with vinyl... thumbs.gif

Yes, but the big question is, Is he talking out of his arse or not, in a controlled environment, would he be able to tell the difference?

I'm getting quite worried now, cos I have never used a CD deck (as I have not had the oppurtunity), and one day I will turn up at a club and be expected to mix out of one paranoid.gif and I won't know what the [censored] to do!!

I can't afford one at the mo, but I really feel I should learn to use one, or I'll be [censored] pretty soon!

I wouldnt worry, they are v easy to use honestly....it really suprised me...if your mixing out of one just got to hope you know the tune laugh.gif or you wont be able to see where to drop your tune!

same way as you do with vinyl......some have a button to press that will 'push' the cd forwards/backwards or you can use the wheel on top of the deck, then adjust the pitch slider

the same as vinyl but slightly different laugh.gif

Thats what I dont agree with tho - I honestly cant tell the difference between the same tune on vinyl+cd.... and im not talking about a cd copy of a vinyl track - im talking about cd copies direct from producers, then buying vinyl to support them (tis only fair!) and cos I prefer to use vinyl..... but the difference between the 2 versions of the same track seems to be nothing except one is a cd and one is a vinyl!

I guess, but surely if the master is burnt to cd and taken to the pressing plant on cd, the quality will only be cd quality??

Yes, but only an idiot would mix a master down to CD and then master vinyl from it. CD should be the FINAL step in your production process, as this is where you lose all your quality.

You would keep your master at 192/32 bit digital, and then mix it down to analogue tape, and then produce your vinyl from that (I think that is what they do, don't quote me), and you would also produce your CD from that master.

But what about producers (a majority I would imagine!) who have no access to a dat (or similar) recorder???

Then you burn your seperate audio tracks which constitute the song to CD as data files (there is a huge difference between burning data and audio...like how you can burn 100MP3's o a disk, cos you are recording just the data, whereas if you want it to be "CD audio" you can only get 80 mins) And the you do the final mix down at wherever the track is going to be mastered and pressed (which is what my band will do when we do our demo).

So in effect, all the CD contains is 10/15 (whatever) UNMIXED audio tracks at 192khz/32 bit (10 tracks * 5 mins of stereo audio at this quality will probably fill a CD). At this point, you are using the CD as a large floppy disc, not as a method of listening to audio, no standard CD would be able to read the audio from it.....thus you maintain the quality.

The draw back of this is that the place where you are mastering the CD has to run the same software as you used to do your mix.

laugh.gif they aren't as much fun to use as vinyl, they take all the fun and skill out of djing imo (very important that bit!) but it is a nice add on to the set up.

I didn't say that they didn't have their place as obviously they do, getting tunes straight off producers from the studio, but I think they make the 'anybody can be a dj' even more true.
