SPANKED - STAMFORD 26.06.03

Well I’d been back home for about a month now, and was quite happy to find out there was more to life than the few local nights I knew. So after a trip to Existence, bumped into a promoter of a night in Stamford, so thought we’d go and check it out!

Also another reason to go and check it out was that our friends from gurn.net were there, as Dj Burns (Alex) was playing the final set of the night. So Me, Mark, Suz & Liam (from Existence) decided to head up to Stamford and check it out. Non of us had been to Quayhole Kates before, so weren’t sure what to expect. But once inside we were fairly surprised, the Spanked Décor was hung from beams, and on the walls, and there was a fair few people inside already.

It was nice to walk into a new night, and straight away be greeted by mates that I’ve not seen in ages, and had no clue would be there. Once again, there was a lot of drinking and banter, and three lads fuelled with alcohol and equipped with cameras, is bound to lead to trouble…! But its all in the name of being artistic honest, and the promoter David seems to have an eye for the ladies so im sure he doesn’t mind the outcome…

The crowd was a mixture of cyber girls in furry boots and hot pants, to funky girls in frilly skirts and leg warmers, and the same for the lads, a mixture of brightly coloured cyber, or funky jeans and t-shirts. But that aside there were smiles in the air as they danced away to the mixture of hardhouse and hardhouse.

From 9pm-midnight was a bit of a blur but feather (David the promoter), Martyn Harrison and Ruff n Tumble span the tunes and got the crowd worked up into a dancing frenzy, before the man billed as the next Eddie Halliwell took the decks, yes you guessed it, its Goodgreefs latest boy Wonder Shan, it was my first time of hearing him, and I was pleasantly surprised, his mix of vocal hard trance into some classics like “Malice in wonderland – Pants & Corset” had the crowd stomping hard…

By now it was 1am and the crowd were up for it, as gurn.net’s resident hardhouse guru Dj Burns took to the decks, there was a Clap of the hands and cheer for Shan … and then he got down to business, playing a mix of fast and furious hardhouse … but staying away from the quite repetitive style hardhouse has seem to gone to these days. I must say his style and mixing has come on energetically since I last saw him play at Sundissential on Boxing Day 2001.

All in all I had a great night, im glad to see there is a good local atmosphere in and around Cambridgeshire these days, and that bigger and better things can happen, contrary to belief of some people in these parts.
